Syracuse Loses to #7 Tennessee

Syracuse (3-1) fought neck-and-neck with #7/8 Tennessee (4-0) for the majority of the matchup, but ultimately fell short, losing 73-56 on Monday in the first game of the Maui Invitational. Sophomores Judah Mintz and Chris Bell combined for 31 of the Orange's 56 points in the contest.
Bell, coming off a career-high 25 points against Colgate, scored 10 of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes to lead the Orange offense. Mintz scored 13 points after halftime. Sophomore guard Benny Williams came off the bench to score eight points in just 16 minutes of play.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
With the Orange trailing by three, 48-45 at the 8:35 mark in the second half, the Vols pulled away with a 9-3 run to bring their lead to 57-48, thanks in part to two layups and two free-throws from Jahmai Mashack. Although Syracuse fought to stay in the game, coming within five points with 3:14 left, Tennessee closed out the contest with a 12-0 run to win, 73-56.
VOLS SURGE LATE IN FIRST HALF
Syracuse held Tennessee to just 4-of-19 field goals in the first 10:43 minutes to begin the game, allowing the Orange to construct a 19-11 advantage. Syracuse used an eight-point run, capped off by a three-pointer from Williams, to move in front. The Vols retaliated with seven unanswered points to cut the margin to one, 19-18.
The Orange were held from making a field goal in the last 5:39 of the first half, and entered the intermission down, 30-25. Tennessee's Dalton Knecht had an impressive 15-point performance in the first 20 minutes.
THE ORANGE APPLY PRESSURE
The Volunteers scored the first six points out of the break to move ahead, 36-25. Syracuse strung together an eight-point run starting at the 16:58 mark powered by two jumpers and a layup from Bell that sliced the Tennessee lead to three, 38-35.. The Vols' edge bounced between three and five points for the majority of the second half before Tennessee extended its margin to nine, 52-45. Mintz helped the Orange stay in the mix by scoring 13 of his 15 points in the last 20 minutes.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse stays in Honolulu for the second round of the Maui Invitational. The Orange will matchup with the loser of today's Purdue versus Gonzaga pairing, on Tuesday, November 21. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. EST and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
