Syracuse and Pittsburgh will celebrate the centennial anniversary of the first football game played in Yankee Stadium when they meet on Saturday in the Bronx. The 1923 meeting between the two teams laid the groundwork for a long history of football at Yankee Stadium.
Â
"Celebrating 100 years at Yankee Stadium playing our rival Pitt Panthers. The first game was 3-0 Syracuse, obviously a defensive battle. I'm sure it's going to be another defensive game in Yankee Stadium," head coach Dino Babers said during his weekly press conference. "They're a physical bunch. Pat Narduzzi does a fantastic job and we're looking forward to meeting them there."
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on ACC Network. This is the Orange's 11th trip to Yankee Stadium to play college football. Syracuse is 7-3 in those games, including a 2-2 record at the new stadium, which opened in 2009.
Â
The Orange won four in a row at Yankee Stadium dating back to their 1963 triumph over Notre Dame at the old ballpark before losing to the Fighting Irish in their most recent regular season neutral-site game in the House that Ruth Built in 2018. The streak included a 36-34 victory versus Kansas State in the inaugural New Era Pinstripe Bowl.
Â
"It's exciting to go to Yankee Stadium," Babers said. "It's exciting for the guys that haven't been there. I want to say this is our third trip since I've been here. The whole walking around and knowing Babe Ruth, and all the people who have played in that stadium, it's kind of cool. But I think it's more for the young men who haven't been there. It's more of a young people game. You guys know me, I'd rather play at the Dome with the air conditioner turned off. But I get it. We'll go down there, and we'll play Pitt and it'll be 100 years since the first game and it'll be fun."
Â
Historically, Syracuse has been successful when playing in pro venues in the greater New York/New Jersey area, boasting a 20-16-2 (.552) combined record in games played in Yankee Stadium (7-3), Shea Stadium (1-0), the Polo Grounds (7-6-2), Giants Stadium (5-3) and MetLife Stadium (0-4).
Â
Saturday's game is the 79th all-time meeting between Syracuse and Pittsburgh. The Panthers are the Orange's most frequent opponent, seven games ahead of Penn State (71). Syracuse's season opener against Colgate was the 67th contest with the Raiders, while the Orange have faced West Virginia 61 times, most recently in Yankee Stadium at the 2012 Pinstripe Bowl. Last Friday's game against Boston College was the 57th meeting between the squads.
Â
The Syracuse-Pitt series dates back to 1916, and the Orange notched their first win against Pitt in 1919. The Panthers recorded an 11-game winning streak from 1973-1983, to which Syracuse responded by going 16-1-1 from 1984-2001.
