Tennis Remains Undefeated With Upset Of #23 Miami

Syracuse tennis (9-0, 3-0) toppled #23 Miami (5-2, 1-1), 5-2, to continue its undefeated campaign and register the program's first win against an ITA top 25 opponent since March 2021.
The Hurricanes dominated doubles play with Maya Tahan/Daevenia Achong (Miami) defeating Zeynep Erman/Shiori Ito, 6-2, and Ines Fonte/Viktoriya Kanapatskaya losing to Alex Noel/Isabella Pfennig (Miami), 6-3. With the doubles point already clinched, Miyuka Kimoto/Polina Kozyreva's match against Mia Mack/Audrey Boch-Collins (Miami) was left unfinished despite the Orange holding a 4-3 advantage.
Unphased by the 1-0 deficit after doubles play, Syracuse rallied during its singles matches. The Orange tied the score after Ito defeated Mack (Miami) 6-4, 6-3, and took control when Kanapatskaya trounced Pfenning (Miami) 6-3, 6-2. Erman swung momentum in favor of the Orange with a historic upset against the #8 ranked singles player in the country, Alexa Noel, winning the intense match 6-4, 6-3. Miami took back a point when Kimoto lost to the Hurricane's Achong (2-6, 6-3, 0-6), but Syracuse would go on to seal its 9th straight win with a Fonte triumph (6-1, 7-6) against Tahan (Miami). Kozyreva remained undefeated in singles matches this season by defeating Boch-Collins (Miami), 4-6, 6-4, 18-16, after the duel had already been decided.
The victory marks the first win against an ITA Top 25 ranked opponent since March 2, 2021, when the Orange took down #11 Georgia Tech, 4-3. Erman's Top 25 singles win is the first of her career, and a feat that has not been accomplished since Kanapatskaya defeated #13 Victoria Flores during the upset against the Yellow Jackets two years ago.
Syracuse looks to match a 10-0 start from the 1978-79 season on Friday, March 3, as it takes on  #20 Virginia at 3:00 p.m. in Drumlins Tennis Club.
