Autry Era Begins

The Autry Era has begun.
Adrian Autry '94 was officially introduced as the eighth head coach in Syracuse University men's basketball history inside a crowded Carmelo K. Anthony Center on Friday morning in Syracuse, a seamless changing of the guard from Hall of Fame head coach to a former player, who has recently served as a longtime associate head coach to Jim Boeheim '66,G'73.
"When I think about what drew me to Syracuse as a player, I think about its history," Autry said. A rich tradition, and what I refer to as an Orange standard that was set by Coach Boeheim. The Orange standard is a history of winning, playing hard and competing for championships. A history of resilience, determination and grit.
"As I take over this program as the head coach, it is these standards that will guide us into the future. I am a new voice, a new face with new ideas, but the standards that have helped build this program will not change."
There wasn't an empty seat as the crowd hustled into the Melo Center welcome Autry to his new post. Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud, Director of Athletics John Wildhack '80 and Boeheim all spoke before Autry took the stage to deliver his first remarks as head coach.
"I know you have always heard about how Syracuse is a family, and we take care of our own," Autry said as he addressed the current players. "And today is a testament to that. As I stand up here as a former player, proud alum, and now your next head coach, I am excited for the future, and what we are going to do together."
Â
Autry's warm smile filled up the room as he joked about being the easiest All-American Boeheim ever had to recruit and Boeheim shared strong sentiments about the skill that his protegee possesses.Â
"I've known Adrian Autry since he was 16-years-old. He scored 30 in New York City against Kenny Anderson, and I said we have to get that guy to Syracuse," Boeheim said of Autry. "A few years ago, we needed to get him to come back, and he's a great coach. Adrian Autry can coach. He's not here as a recruiter or a player. He can coach. He knows how to coach and he's got two assistants who could both be head coaches. There will be no problem going forward. None."
Wildhack echoed similar thoughts on the Orange's new head coach.Â
"Adrian earned this," Wildhack said. "He's not here because he's an alum. He's not here because he played here or was the associate head coach here. He's here because I believe he's the best candidate to lead this program and to sustain the success that Coach Boeheim has established over 47 years."
The excitement will continue to build in the next few days, weeks and months as Autry fills out his coaching staff and builds on a team that he believes has potential to accomplish a lot of great things in the future.
