Wake Forest Buzzer Beater Defeats Orange, 77-74

Syracuse (17-15) rallied from a 13-point deficit but Wake Forest (19-13) converted a last-second 3-pointer and captured a 77-74 triumph in the second round of the 2023 New York Life ACC Men's Basketball Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday afternoon. Graduate student Daivien Williamson hit the game winner for the Demon Deacons.
Freshman guard Judah Mintz and sophomore forward Benny Williams both collected 18 points in the loss. Williams' matched his career-high of 11 rebounds and posted his third double-double of the season. Senior center Jesse Edwards (12 points, 10 rebounds) tallied his 14th double-double of the year, the most by an Orange performer in a single campaign over the last 10 years. Freshman forward Chris Bell rounded out Syracuse double-digit scorers with 11 total points.
After Wake Forest scored the first four points, Syracuse amassed a 16-4 run. Williams led the way with eight unanswered points, and closed out the Orange spurt with a layup and back-to-back 3-pointers. SU held a 16-8 advantage with 11:36 to play in the first half.

Williamson put his first basket on the board, but Bell knocked down a 3-pointer and Girard shot three-for-three at the line, to round out six consecutive 'Cuse points that put the Orange ahead, 22-10.

Across the following three minutes, Wake notched 11 consecutive points. Freshman forward Bobi Klintman collected eight of those points to close the gap to one, 22-21.Â

The Demon Deacons knotted the contest, 29-29, thanks to an 8-2 spurt. Wake's eight points were evenly split between Williamson and graduate student guard Tyree Appleby. In the last two minutes before the break, both squads traded baskets, but SU grabbed a 35-33 advantage at halftime.
WAKE FOREST WRESTLES AWAY ADVANTAGEÂ
Wake Forest used a 17-1 stretch to take control early in the second half. Williamson opened and closed the run with a pair of 3-pointers. The Demon Deacons bumped their lead to 12, 54-42, with 13:36 left to play. A basket in the lane by junior forward Andrew Carr handed Wake Forest it's largest margin, 56-43, with 10:55 remaining.

Mintz used a 3-pointer to ignite a 14-2 run that brought SU within a single point, 58-57. Appleby followed with two makes at the foul line before Williams completed a three-point play at the charity stripe to tie the ballgame for the fifth time, 60-60.
A basket in the lane from Mintz, followed by a Williams 3-pointer, put the Orange ahead, 74-72 with under a minute to go. Sophomore guard Cameron Hildreth knotted the score for Wake and set things up for the dramatic finish that ensued.
