Syracuse University men's lacrosse will be back on the road this weekend. The No. 13/No. 12 Orange will travel to Charlottesville, Virginia to take on No. 3/No. 4 Virginia. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. Paul Carcaterra '97 and Chris Cotter will be on the call for ESPNU.Â
History vs. Virginia
The last time Syracuse played Virginia was on April 23, 2022 in the JMA Wireless Dome. It marked the first collegiate start for Jackson Birtwistle. The midfielder scored a career high five goals for the Orange.
Rising in the Rankings
After defeating No. 12/No. 11 North Carolina, Syracuse climbed to No. 13 in the USILA poll and No. 12 in the Inside Lacrosse Media poll. It is the highest the Orange have been in either poll this season. The Orange will look to add to their list of ranked wins this season with their match against No. 3/No. 4 Virginia.
Leo's Last Minute Goal
In last weekend's tilt against North Carolina, midfielder Michael Leo scored with just 12 seconds left on the clock. The unassisted goal lifted the Orange to a 15-14 win over the No. 12 Tar Heels. Leo also scored during the third period, making it his sixth multi-goal game of the season.
Will Mark: Tewaaraton Award Nominee
Goalie Will Mark has been named one of 25 nominees by the Tewaaraton Foundation for the 2023 Tewaaraton Award. The LIU transfer has a season high 22 saves which came against Duke on March 5. It was just one of 11 double-digit save games for Mark.Â
Man-Up Opportunities
Syracuse has proven to have one of the top man-up offenses in the country. The squad is led by attackmen Owen Hiltz and Joey Spallina. Hiltz has an ACC high 15 points (3g, 12a) during man-up opportunities. Freshman standout Joey Spallina has 14 points, including a national-best 10 man-up goals this season.
