Syracuse and Colgate square off on Saturday to kick start the 2023 Orange football season. Here's 5 things to know about the matchup:
1. EMPIRE STATE OF MIND
Syracuse and Colgate's series dates back to the third season of Syracuse football in 1891. Saturday's game will be the 68th meeting with the Upstate New York foe is Syracuse's third-most frequently played rival, trailing Pittsburgh (78), Penn State (71) and edging fourth-place West Virginia (61) on the all-time ledger.
The series is tied 31-31-5 all time, however 'Cuse is riding a 16-game winning streak vs. the Raiders. Colgate's last win over the Orange came in 1950.
The Orange also have a 13-game winning streak against teams from the Empire State. 'Cuse is 75-78-11 all-time against teams from their home state. They've been exceptionally good lately though. Over that 13-game winning streak, Syracuse has out-scored its opposition 553-128.
Saturday's game is the first of two games vs. New York State opponents. Army visits the JMA Dome on Sept. 23.
2. OPENING UP
'Cuse is 93-34-4 in home openers – a record that excludes the 1979 season when the team played all their games on the road due to the construction of the Dome, and the 1889 season when the team did not play a Dome game.
Under Head Coach Dino Babers, Syracuse boasts a 6-1 record in season openers, part of the program's streak of winning eight of the last-nine season openers. The only blemish over the last decade came during the 2020 season, when SU lost at North Carolina to open the year.
Since the Dome opened in 1980, 'Cuse is 24-19 in home starters and the team has won eight of its last-10 home openers.
3. THE LOUD HOUSE
Otto's Army, the official student section of Syracuse athletics, sold out of its season tickets once again prior to the season, but individual game opportunities remain for SU students, by clicking here.
Season tickets, partial plans and individual game tickets are now on sale at Cuse.com/Tickets. Season tickets, which start at just $99, remain the best value for Orange fans. Fans can also purchase group tickets, hospitality packages and tailgate packages.
4. SHRADER RISING IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Quarterback Garrett Shrader returns for his third year to lead the SU offense. A dual threat, he's rising in a number of Syracuse and ACC record lists.
He enters the season as one-of-five active FBS quarterbacks with over 5,000 passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards in their career. The others are Jordan Travis (Florida State), Jayden Daniels (LSU), Spencer Sanders (Ole Miss) and Frank Harris (UTSA).
He also ranks sixth in program history in touchdowns responsible for (49), eighth in touchdown passes (26) and 11th in rushing touchdowns (23), where he's tied with the great Jim Brown. Shrader's next touchdown (throwing or rushing) will move him into sixth all time in touchdowns responsible for, passing 'Cuse legend Floyd Little, and his next rushing touchdown passes hall of famer Larry Csonka. Those numbers only account his Syracuse tallies, and not his time at Mississippi State. Likewise, his rushing touchdowns total at Syracuse is 13th in ACC history by a quarterback – despite less than two full seasons played in the league – where he is tied with Tyrod Taylor.
