Syracuse (2-4-0) and Cornell (2-0-1) played a tightly-contested match before the host Big Red earned a 1-0 decision on Sunday in Ithaca, N.Y.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout with limited scoring opportunities for each squad.
SYRACUSE TESTS CORNELL KEEPER
Two of the better looks Syracuse had in the first half came 10 minutes apart. Kate Murphy fired low at Cornell's Natalie Medugno at 27:48 and the Big Red netminder managed to make the stop. At 38:07, Erin Flurey guided her shot attempt at the upper left portion of the goal but Medugno came up big.
RED ALERT
The hosts broke a scoreless tie with a goal at 34:33 in the first half. Mia Gonzalez earned her squad's first strong opportunity and took advantage with a hard drive at the net. Syracuse keeper Shea Vanderbosch came out to challenge and got a hand on the attempt but the ball had enough steam on it to roll into the goal.
ORANGE CHALLENGE LATE
Syracuse built two scoring chances in the final 10 minutes. The first came from Alyssa Abramson, who carried the ball on the left side into position for a left-footed drive that sailed just wide of the goal. Shortly after, Ashley Rauch made a spectacular effort, soaring to direct a hard header toward the Cornell cage. It also landed wide.
VANDERBOSCH STANDS TALL
Vanderbosch worked to keep Syracuse within reach of Cornell. She finished with five saves, including three that came after the intermission.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
