Syracuse alum Gabriela Knutson is on the cusp of qualifying for the singles bracket of the Australian Open.
The first of the sport's four grand slam competitions, Knutson has defeated Anna-Lena Friedsam (who was seeded 17th in the qualifying portion of the event) 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Raluka Serban 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 en route to setting up tonight's final qualifying match with Yulia Starodubtseva. A win would place her in the first round of the main field, which begins on Jan. 14.
Knutson is currently in the top-200 in the world rankings, checking in at No. 168, after concluding her Orange career in 2019. She was a two-time All-American for Syracuse, two-time First Team All-ACC honoree and the ITA Senior Player of the Year (Northeast) in 2019.
Her final qualifying match will come on Thursday night at 8:40 eastern time on ESPN+ (Court 17 stream).
