Field Hockey Holds at Twelve in Weekly Poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After taking a top-five team to the brink on Friday, Syracuse University field hockey held firm at the number 12 spot in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced its Week 7 poll Tuesday morning.
Syracuse (10-4) went into extra rounds of the deciding shootout on the road at No. 4 Virginia on Friday, ultimately falling to the Cavaliers 3-2 and 4-3 in the shootout. The Orange picked up 465 points this week, 46 more points than a week ago but Syacuse remained in the number 12 spot.
Northwestern moved up into the top spot by just three points, picking up 1,005 alongside 36 first-place votes. North Carolina was second with 1,002 points and the remaining 16 first-place votes. Ohio State held at third with 862 points as did Virginia in the number four hole with 849 points. Saint Joseph's moved into fifth place with 828 points.
Five ACC schools were ranked inside the top 20 this week: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 4 Virginia, No. 9 Boston College, No. 10 Duke, and No. 12 Syracuse.
Throughout the 2024 season, Syracuse will play eight teams ranked in the week seven poll: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Virginia, No. 8 UConn, No. 9 Boston College, No. 10 Duke, No. 13 Princeton, and No. 17 Penn State. The Orange are 4-4 total against top 20 teams this year with all four losses coming against teams currently in the top 10.
Syracuse hits the road one final time this regular season, leading off with Bucknell University on Thursday night for a 7 p.m. showdown on the Susquehanna River. The Orange renew a longtime rivalry on Sunday with the 47th all-time meeting against UConn, ranked eighth this week. Game time in Storrs, Connecticut is slated for noon.
