COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Entering the final week of the 2024 regular season, Syracuse University remained at the number 12 spot in the most recent Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) released its Week 8 poll Tuesday morning.
The Orange (12-4) picked up 498 points, another 33 point bump over last week and a 79 point jump from two weeks ago. This is the third-straight week Syracuse occupies the number 12 spot.
Northwestern remained at the top with 949 points alongside 38 first-place votes followed by North Carolina again at number two with 942 points and 11 first-place votes. Virginia moved up one spot to three with 808 points while Ohio State slid back to four with 735 points. Saint Joseph's held at the number five spot with 724 points.
In addition to Syracuse, four other ACC schools were ranked in the top 20 this week: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Virginia, No. 6 Duke, and Friday's opponent, No. 9 Boston College.
Eight opponents on the 2024 schedule were slotted inside the top 20 this week: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Duke, No. 9 Boston College, No. 10 UConn, which Syracuse beat 3-1 in Storrs on Sunday, No. 13 Princeton, and No. 17 Penn State.
Syracuse, which was slotted in at number nine in the NCAA RPI this week, is currently 5-4 against top 20 teams, picking up wins over then-No. 16 Penn State, No. 16 Louisville, No. 14 Princeton, No. 18 California, and most recently No. 8 UConn. Three of the four Syracuse setbacks this year are against top 10 teams, with the outlier, a loss to then-No. 14 Ohio State. The Buckeyes are now ranked inside the top five.
No. 12 Syracuse takes on No. 9 Boston College for the regular season finale on Friday at J.S. Coyne Stadium. First push is set for 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. Following the game, Syracuse will honor its nine seniors and graduate students.
