Linebacker Justin Barron has been named the Walter Camp Foundation Connecticut Player of the Year for the second-straight season.
A team captain, Barron led the Orange in tackles this year with 86. Barron also notched 8.5 tackles for loss, an interception, a fumble recovery and a pair of sacks on the season. He shared the honor this year with Alabama offensive tackle Tyler Booker. Barron also earned the award in 2023, sharing it with Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.
Barron, Van Dyke, Kory Sheets (Purdue), Dan Orlovsky (UConn) and Tarek Salah (Wisconsin) are the only repeat winners in the over 40-year history of the award. Previous Syracuse recipients include Hall of Famer Dwight Freeney, Ervin Philips, Kyle McIntosh, Rob Thomsen and Terry Wooden.
Barron made the switch to linebacker for Syracuse's week two win over Georgia Tech, in place of injured Marlowe Wax, where he has remained the rest of the season. It's the third position in Barron's tenure, who spent the 2020 season at wide receiver before moving to defensive back up until this season. Barron was one of the top-15 tackle leaders by a defensive back for his career in school history, before converting to linebacker.
Barron and the Orange will face Washington State in the DIRECTV Holiday Bowl on Friday. For tickets and information, visit Cuse.com/Bowl.
