Syracuse (16-10, 7-8 ACC) battled back from a 10-point deficit in the second half, but fell short against Georgia Tech (11-14, 4-10), 65-60, on Saturday night in the McCamish Pavilion.
The sophomore backcourt pair of J.J. Starling (18 points) and Judah Mintz (14) combined for 32 of the Orange's 60 points in the contest. Sophomore swingman Quadir Copeland contributed nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Center Maliq Brown, a sophomore, grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and tied his personal-high with five steals.
Four performers scored in double-figures for the Yellow Jackets: senior guard Kyle Sturdivant (17 points), freshman forward Baye Ndongo (16), junior guard Miles Kelly (16) and sophomore forward Tafara Gapare (10). Ndongo and Kelly achieved double-doubles with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The Orange trailed by one, 59-58, with 2:11 left in the affair. Both teams missed opportunities to score until 31 seconds left, when Kelly drove down the lane and laid to in. Brown fouled him on the shot and Kelly converted from the foul line for the three-point play, giving the home team a four-point advantage. Mintz was fouled with 26 seconds to go and made both from the charity stripe. Syracuse was unable to snag the ball from Georgia Tech, and the Yellow Jackets converted three-of-four from the line to end the game.

Syracuse held Georgia Tech to just one-of-nine (.111) from the field in the first 5:55 of the outing. The strong defense helped give the visiting Orange a 9-2 lead 3:05 into the game.
