Copeland's Last-Second Bucket Beats Louisville

Sophomore swingman Quadir Copeland's layup with five seconds left, which scored on a goaltending call, brought Syracuse (15-8, 6-6 ACC) to victory against Louisville (7-16, 2-10), 94-92, on Wednesday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Sophomore forward Chris Bell posted a career-high 30 points which featured a personal-best eight 3-pointers. He also equaled his top board effort with six.
The sophomore backcourt pair of Judah Mintz (21 points) and J.J. Starling (19) combined for 40 points. Copeland tallied 11 points and dished out seven assists. Sophomore center Maliq Brown contributed a collegiate-best six blocks, five assists and five steals, and was one rebound away from a double-double, logging 11 points and nine rebounds.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
Bell's 3-pointer with 37 seconds left put the Orange in front, 91-87. Louisville sophomore guard Tre White answered on a rebound dunk with 24 seconds remaining that brought the Cardinals within two. Mintz threw an errant pass that was intercepted by Louisville, but Bell blocked an attempt in the paint by sophomore guard Skyy Clark, Copeland gathered the rebound and was fouled with 14 seconds remaining. Copeland converted one-of-two to extend the Syracuse advantage to 92-89. Out of a Louisville timeout, Clark drained a 3-pointer with five seconds to go that knotted the game at 92-92. Copeland responded quickly, taking the inbounds the length of the court to attempt the game winner. Louisville was called for goaltending on the shot, and the Orange led, 94-92. Louisville managed a last-ditch 3-pointer by Clark but he misfired as time expired.
THE BALL FOUND THE BUCKET
Both squads hit shots all game. The Orange finished the contest 31-of-51 (.608) from the field, a season-best mark, and Louisville made 35-of-65 (.538) attempts. The two rivals were effected on 3-point tries as well, with Syracuse hitting 10-of-22 (.455) and the Cards canning 11-of-25 (.440).
BACK-AND-FORTH RALLIES IN FIRST HALF
After sophomore forward Justin Taylor drove down the lane for the first bucket of the game, the Cardinals scored nine unanswered points. The Orange were held without a field goal for a 2:41 span before Bell hit a three from the corner. Bell's basket sparked a 14-2 Syracuse run that gave the home team a 16-11 advantage with 13:23 to go in the period. Louisville responded with eight consecutive points to take back the lead, 19-16, at the 11:45 mark.
The Orange went ahead again after Copeland fed Brown at the rim for a dunk. After a 3-pointer from Louisville's Clark, Bell retaliated with a long-range shot that began a seven-point rally for the Orange. The run gave the hosts a 27-22 advantage with 8:23 before halftime. From then on, the teams were tied five additional times before the intermission. Louisville downed the last bucket of the half and the teams went into the locker rooms with Syracuse in front, 49-45.
Bell led all players in first half points with 18. He hit seven-of-nine from the field and four-of-six 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes. The Cardinals had five performers with seven-or-more points before the intermission.
A TIGHT RACE IN THE SECOND HALF
Neither team led by more than four points for the first 10 minutes of the second half. There were nine lead changes during the 10-minute span. With the scored equal at 71-71 with 8:06 left in the game, the Cardinals rallied an 8-2 run that gave them a 79-73 advantage, their largest lead since the 17:07 mark in the first half. Syracuse bounced back with six unanswered points to knot the game at 79-79 with 4:39 to go. The Orange led by as many as six points in the final 2:25 of the game. Louisville stayed within striking distance until the very end.
Each team had three performers score in double-figures in the second half: Louisville had Clark (16 points), White (12) and Huntley-Hatfield (11), and Syracuse had Bell (12), Mintz (11) and Starling (10).

- Bell's eight 3-pointers were the most by a Syracuse player since Andrew White III had eight against Georgia Tech in March 4, 2017.
- Syracuse managed only 21 rebounds, the team's lowest total since the Orange finished with 21 against Baylor on November 27, 2013.
- The Cards ended up with a 40-21 board advantage.
- Syracuse's 49 first-half points represented its second highest total of the season, trailing the 52 put up against Chaminade in the Maui Invitational.
- The Orange improved to 10-0 when scoring 80-or-more points.
