CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After helping then ninth-ranked Syracuse University men's lacrosse to a 14-13 win over then-No. 4 Johns Hopkins, two Orange earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
Midfielder Jake Stevens and longstick midfielder Saam Olexo were selected as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
A do-it all midfielder, Stevens racked a second-half hat trick as the Orange knocked off No. 4 Johns Hopkins 14-13 in Charlotte, North Carolina over the weekend, the first top-five win for Syracuse this season. The Princeton University grad transfer came up big in the clutch, scoring the final two Syracuse goals, including what stood as the game-winning goal with the man advantage. His second goal of the night came early in the fourth quarter as he nabbed one of his three ground balls directly from the faceoff and blistered through the Hopkins defense for a 13-10 lead.
An LSM tasked with marking one of Hopkins' top scoring threat at attack, Olexo held former high school teammate Russell Melendez in check as the Jay took just one shot on the evening and was held without a point for just the second time in his Johns Hopkins career and first time this season. Seeing time on the wing, Olexo grabbed two ground balls while aiding the Orange faceoff unit to a 70-percent night and was key in limiting the Blue Jays to an 11-of-17 (.647) clearing effort.
Now ranked sixth by both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll, Syracuse heads for more northern climes on Saturday. The Orange take on No. 20 Delaware this Saturday at St. Paul VI's Luke McGuire Stadium. Game time for the Corrigan Sports Enterprises-hosted event is set for 2 p.m. Tickets and game information can be found at Corrigan Sports Enterprises website.
