ALBANY, N.Y. – Year six for the Premier Lacrosse League begins unofficially this weekend as the PLL opens training camp in New York's Capital District. Eleven former Syracuse University men's lacrosse players are set to gear up for camps with their respective teams and officials crew.
Moving to a more city-centric model this season, the PLL will open the 2024 campaign in Albany at the University at Albany's Casey Stadium June 1 and June 2. The newly renamed and Orange-heavy New York Atlas will play twice that weekend, taking on the Boston Cannons at 3:30 p.m. on June 1 and the Maryland Whipsnakes on June 2, also at 3:30 p.m.
The Maryland Whipsnakes carry four former Syracuse players to camp this weekend, with third-year long stick midfielder Brett Kennedy and second-year midfielder Tucker Dordevic leading the way. Will Mark and Christian Mulé recently concluded their 'Cuse careers. The former was claimed by the Whipsnakes after the 2024 PLL Collegiate Draft while the latter was announced to the training camp roster this week.
New York Atlas boast three former 'Cuse connections as Drake Porter begins his second PLL season with the Atlas. Do-it-all midfielder Jake Stevens was drafted second in the second round of the most recent PLL Draft as his Syracuse and Princeton careers came to a conclusion. Steven Brooks returns to the Atlas as an assistant coach. He guided the Atlas to a 3-0 mark during the 2023 Championship Series pool play as the team reached the Championship Series title game that season as well.
Now anchored on the West Coast, the California Redwoods welcome in two Syracuse standouts: Cole Kirst for his second year as a midfielder and Alex Simmons, who did not play in the PLL in 2023. Kirst was tabbed as the PLL Teammate of the Year in 2023 while Simmons begins his PLL career after an incredibly successful rookie season with the NLL's Albany FireWolves, pacing the team to the NLL Championship series for the first time ever and earning NLL Rookie of the Year honors.
Picked up after the 2024 PLL Collegiate Draft, long stick midfielder Saam Olexo will join the resurgent Denver Outlaws for camp, a fitting team selection for the versatile pole who can throw takeaway checks and score in transition.
Legendary official, All-American, three-time National Champion and Hall of Fame goalie Matt Palumb returns to the yellow shirts of the PLL for another season as well. Noted as one of the best officials in the sport, Palumb has been with the PLL since its inaugural season while sporting the famed Syracuse number 44 on his officials uniform.
