SPARKS, Md. – With the lacrosse world descending on Utica, New York in a month, USA Lacrosse has announced its roster for the upcoming World Lacrosse Box Championships. Two Syracuse standouts were named to the 23-man roster for the upcoming games.
A mainstay on any US team, Joel White was selected to the box squad for a third team, helping the American side win bronze most recently in 2019. Rising junior Joey Spallina, who made a name in the box playing in the Ontario Junior Lacrosse League (OJLL) the last two summers, was named to his first USA Men's Lacrosse Box Team.
Action for the World Lacrosse Box Championships is set to run from September 20-29 in Utica, New York with another former Orange, Regy Thorpe, set to guide the men's team once again.
A two-time Tewaaraton Award finalist, White had one of the finest careers by a Syracuse player, winning back-to-back national championships (2008, 2009), winning the Lt. Donald C. MacLaughlin Jr. Award as the most outstanding midfielder (2010), the first defensive specialist to do so, and was a three-time USILA All-America selection, including first team honors in his junior (2010) and senior (2011) seasons. A force in transition, White still holds the program mark for most points by a defensive player (28) while graduating as the all-time career ground balls leader (283). White accounted for 61 caused turnovers, the fourth-most all-time. In the National Lacrosse League (NLL) White went on to grab 911 loose balls in his nine seasons, including the 2017 title with the Georgia Swarm. He has also won world championships with the US team at the Under-19 (2008) and Senior (2018) levels.
Spallina turned in another outstanding season for Syracuse, resetting the program's single-season points record by a sophomore with 37 goals and 51 assists, surpassing head coach Gary Gait's mark. The two-time USILA All-America pick already has 156 points in his two seasons with the Orange, tallying a balanced 73 goals with 83 assists, canning 33.5 percent of his total shots. The Mount Sinai, New Yorker has 16 extra-man goals for the orange, including a nation's best 10 his freshman season (2023). Indoors, Spallina was selected as the OJLL Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after posting 40 goals and 40 assists in just 13 playoff games, including a dominating performance with seven goals and six assists in a decisive 20-12 win in the OJLL title game.
