SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University volleyball team announced its captains for the 2024 season on Tuesday. Klara Zarnovicka, Nikki Shimao and Elizabeth Schuster will hold the role for the Orange this fall.
Zarnovicka, an outside hitter and right side from the Czech Republic, is Syracuse's lone senior. Although she joined the Orange prior to the start of the 2023 season, she did not appear in a match last year due to injury. Prior to arriving at Syracuse, Zarnovicka played two seasons at Florida Atlantic, where she ranked No. 10 in Conference USA in kills per set during the team's 2021 campaign.
Shimao joins the Orange this season as a graduate student. The defensive specialist/libero from Honolulu, Hawaii, played for current Syracuse head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam at Temple for two seasons (2020-21). In her four years with the Owls, Shimao tallied 464 digs, 179 assists and 17 aces. She was also named to the All-AAC Academic team three times at Temple.
Schuster comes to Syracuse this season after a successful 2023 campaign at Oregon State. The setter from Long Beach, California, registered the second-most assists (439) for the Beavers a season ago and racked up double-digit assists on 21 occasions. Before her time at Oregon State, Schuster spent three seasons at Cal State Fullerton, where she was an All-Big West honorable mention in 2022 after posting 980 assists.
Syracuse kicks off its season Friday with a pair of matches at the Women's Building. The Orange will face NJIT at 11 a.m. before taking on Lafayette at 7 p.m. Both matches are part of the Salt City Classic, which Syracuse is co-hosting with Le Moyne.
