Orange Fall To High-Flying Cardinals
1/14/2025 9:05:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Chris Bell paced Syracuse (8-9, 2-4 ACC) with 18 points Tuesday night at the JMA Wireless Dome against Louisville (13-5, 6-1) and Eddie Lampkin Jr. secured his third straight double-double, but it was not enough for the Orange to overcome the red-hot Cardinals, who won, 85-61, for their sixth straight conference triumph.
How The Game Was Decided
The Orange had few answers for Louisville's offense, which was efficient throughout but especially prolific from beyond the arc, with the Cardinals shooting 12-of-28 on 3-pointers.
A Petar Majstorovic layup cut the Louisville lead to just four points, 31-27, with 4:57 remaining in the opening half before a 3-point barrage in the closing minutes of the period allowed the Cardinals to establish a 16-point halftime advantage. Chucky Hepburn knocked down back-to-back attempts from deep before Reyne Smith made it three in a row with another conversion. Hepburn then hit his third triple in a span of just under three minutes to push the Cardinals ahead, 43-27, a lead they took into intermission.
The Cardinals stayed hot from behind the 3-point line in the opening minutes of the second half, as Smith connected on their first attempt of the period before J'Vonne Hadley hit one of his own. Louisville went 6-of-7 from deep in a 6:28 span to close the first half and open the second period, extending its advantage from four to 17 points (51-34) in that time.
Lampkin Extends Double-Double Streak
Lampkin Jr. posted his third straight double-double and his sixth of the campaign with 11 points and 10 boards. It is his longest streak of double-doubles this season. He has now double-doubled in four of his last six appearances.
Against the Cardinals, Lampkin Jr. went 5-of-8 from the field and made his only free throw attempt. He also had two assists and a steal on the night.
Over the three-game stretch, Lampkin Jr. is averaging 10.3 points and 11.7 rebounds. He has also grabbed 11 offensive rebounds over the last three outings.
Orange In Double Figures
Three Syracuse players surpassed 10 points on the night – Bell (18), Lampkin Jr. (11) and Jyare Davis (10). Bell's 18 points matched his third most in a game this season and marked the second time he has reached that output in the last four contests. He knocked down a team-best four 3-pointers and went 6-of-9 from the field.
Davis pulled down eight rebounds for his ninth game on the campaign with at least five points and five boards. All 10 of his points came in the opening frame, as he was the team's leading scorer entering halftime.
Cardinals Fly High In First Half
The Cardinals flew out to a strong start, establishing a 13-4 advantage in the first six minutes of the contest behind points from five different players. However, the Orange immediately fought back, cutting the score to 13-10 after consecutive 3-pointers by Davis and Bell.
Louisville extended the lead back to eight, 25-17, following a four-point play from Smith, who entered the night with the most made 3-pointers in the ACC. The Cardinals went ahead by as many as 11 before Syracuse again chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to four with 4:57 left.
Notable Numbers
Syracuse is back in the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday for a rematch with Notre Dame, who defeated the Orange in December, 69-64. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. and the game will air live on the ACC Network.
