Syracuse Comeback Bid Halted By Stanford
1/30/2025 1:16:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Jaquan Carlos matched his season high with 16 points off the bench to steer a comeback effort for Syracuse (9-12, 3-7 ACC) on Wednesday night against Stanford (15-6, 7-3 ACC) but the Orange's rally at Maples Pavilion fell short, as the Cardinal held on for a 70-61 victory. Â
How The Game Was Decided
After trailing by as many as 23 in the first half, the Orange clawed their way back to within six with 3:33 remaining in regulation. Syracuse scored three straight baskets to trim the deficit to six, the smallest it had been since the opening three minutes of the game, with four points from Jyare Davis and two from J.J. Starling. However, the Orange got no closer, as Stanford quickly rebuilt the lead to nine and held on to win by that margin. Â
Carlos' Contributions
For the second time this season, Carlos paced the Orange in scoring, as his 16 points were his most since he also had 16 against Wake Forest on Dec. 31. The guard finished the game 6-of-6 from the field, which included a pair of 3-pointers, his first time making multiple triples in a game this season.
Carlos helped Syracuse's bench outscore Stanford's, 32-16, as the Orange reserves outscored their opponent's bench for the 16th straight game.
Sizzling Stanford Start
Stanford blitzed Syracuse in the opening minutes, surging ahead 25-2 after a 9-of-15 start from the field. Maxime Raynaud, who entered Wednesday's contest averaging a double-double, scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds in that opening scoring run that gave the Cardinal an early 22-point advantage.
Orange Rally
The Orange answered Stanford's 25-2 run to begin the first half with a 22-8 stretch to close it. Carlos scored five of the first six points for Syracuse during its run before Lucas Taylor knocked down the team's first 3-pointer of the night. Starling, Eddie Lampkin Jr. and Davis combined for Syracuse's next 10 points as the Orange got back to within seven points. Carlos scored Syracuse's final basket of the period, but the Cardinal took a nine-point advantage into intermission, 33-24.
Second-Half Stalemate
Syracuse and Stanford traded baskets and momentum throughout most of the second half. The Cardinal could not extend its nine-point halftime lead beyond 14 while the Orange got no closer than seven points until the 3:33 mark of the second period.
Lampkin Jr. led the Orange in the second half with 10 points, which he reached by going 3-of-3 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free throw line. Carlos scored nine of his 16 points after halftime, as the two combined for 19 of Syracuse's 37 second-half points.
Notable Numbers
Syracuse closes its west-coast swing on Saturday with a trip to California. The contest at Haas Pavilion will begin at 10 p.m. and will air on ESPN2.
