The Syracuse University Volleyball team (10-3, 2-1 ACC) got its trip to Virginia started on a high note on Friday evening, taking down the Virginia Tech Hokies (8-6, 0-3 ACC) by a score of 3-1. The match took place in Blacksburg, Virginia at Cassell Coliseum.
Â
Gabriella McLaughlin posted a season-high 20 kills to go along with 10 digs, one block and one ace. The double-double marks her ninth of the year, a team high. Tehya Maeva led the way with 41 assists while also anchoring the defense with 11 digs.
Â
Syracuse posted a .210 hitting percentage and notched seven blocks in the win. The victory lifts Syracuse to 10-3 on the year, while the Orange improve to 2-1 in conference play.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening frame set the tone for the entire match, with the score being tied on 15 separate occasions. The Orange and Hokies went tit-for-tat, with neither team owning a lead larger than three points. After the two squads each reached 28 points, the Hokies were able to put away the Orange and win the set, 30-28.
Â
It was much of the same in the second set with the frame featuring 11 tie scores and four lead changes. Like the first set, the largest lead of the second frame was just three points. Once again, 25 points was not enough to decide a winner, though. This time, it was the Orange who prevailed, with freshman Marie Laurio providing a timely kill to boost Syracuse to a 27-25 win.
Â
The start of the third looked as if the two squads were heading towards another set requiring extra points. The Hokies suddenly went on a quick run to open up a 21-18 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Orange went on a 7-2 run to seize a 25-23 win in set three. Reese Teves sealed the deal with her 15th ace of the season.
Â
The fourth set was more one-sided than the rest, as the Orange never trailed. The Hokies knotted it up early at 4-4 but the Orange would lead the rest of the way as they coasted to a 25-19 set win to clinch the match.
