Orange Fall Versus Clemson In Last Second Finish
10/5/2025 3:34:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Clemson's Anna Castenfelt scored off a free kick just six seconds from full-time and the Tigers (4-4-5, 1-3-2) defeated Syracuse (4-6-4, 0-5-1) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Stadium.Â
Syracuse goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch recorded a season-high 11 saves in the contest.Â
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
The matchup between the Orange and the Tigers wasn't decided until the very last seconds. After an Anna Rupert foul on the edge of the box, Castenfelt lined up to take a free kick from the right edge at the 89:50 mark. Her right-footed effort curled around the Syracuse wall and into the bottom-right corner of the goal, securing the win for Clemson with one of the last kicks of the game.Â
FAST FROM THE JUMP
Clemson had a golden opportunity to open the scoring at the 2:27 mark. Forward Natalie Brooks picked up a pass on the left edge of the box, firing a strike across net that was parried by Vanderbosch. The rebound fell straight to Tigers forward Juju Harris, who blazed her shot over the empty net.Â
It was Syracuse, however, who found the opener in the contest. At the 6:18 mark, Vanderbosch played a long goal kick to the midfield line, finding the head of Rupert. Rupert's header redirected the ball straight into the path of forward Mia Klammer, who calmly passed the ball into the bottom-left corner. The goal for Klammer was her squad-leading sixth on the campaign.Â
TIGERS ANSWER IMMEDIATELY
Just two minutes after Klammer broke the deadlock, Clemson found itself level again. A Tigers' throw-in into the box found the foot of Castenfelt, who played a pass that deflected off of Gabby Wisbeck and popped up. The ball fell at the edge of the box straight onto the foot of Tigers midfielder Emily Brough, who displayed incredible control and directed a volley into the bottom-right corner.Â
WOODWORK DENIES BOTH
The minute-long stretch from the 83:30 mark to 84:40 saw both teams denied by the woodwork. Clemson midfielder Carla Small played a through ball that found the foot of forward Alessandra Washington, who turned and fired a right-footed shot that slammed off the uprights. The rebound fell to Renee Lyles, whose point-blank effort was denied by Vanderbosch.Â
Just a minute later, Klammer latched on to a through ball and went on a dazzling run, weaving through defenders to the right touchline. She squared a cross to midfielder Ashley Rauch, who thumped a right-footed strike off the crossbar.Â
VANDERBOSCH HEROICS
Goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch kept the Orange in the match with multiple acrobatic stops. At the 6:36 mark, Vanderbosch dove to her right, palming away an effort from Castenfelt. At the 40:42 mark, a long through ball found the foot of forward Taylor Leib. Vanderbosch reacted quickly and denied the attempt, redirecting the point-blank shot off the right post.Â
