SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After scoring the biggest goal of her college career, Syracuse University women's ice hockey forward Peyton Armstrong was named AHA Rookie of the Week. Atlantic Hockey America announced its weekly award winners Monday afternoon.
Armstrong scored the game-winning goal for the Orange (14-21) in the AHA Quarterfinals, doing so in dramatic fashion in double overtime. After getting a perfectly timed feed at the blue line from Maya D'Arcy, Armstrong toe-dragged around her defender and put away the game-winning goal. It was Armstrong's fifth goal of the season and her first collegiate game-winning goal while finishing the Quarterfinal round with a +1 rating.
The Armstrong goal advanced the third-seeded Orange to the AHA Semifinals, a best-of-three series this weekend at the Tournament's number two seed, Mercyhurst (18-14-2). Game time on Friday, Feb. 28 is set for 3 p.m. in Erie, Pennsylvania before a 2 p.m. game on Saturday, March 1 at Mercyhurst. Sunday's if-necessary game is set for a 2 p.m. start at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
RIT won the remaining weekly awards from the AHA with Forward of the Week Kylie Aquaro, Defenseman of the Week Emma Pickering, and Goaltender of the Week Sarah Coe.
