Syracuse (11-16, 5-11 ACC) will host NC State (11-16, 4-12 ACC) on Wednesday at the JMA Wireless Dome in its penultimate home game of the season. The game will tip at 7 p.m. and will air live on ESPNU.
Setting The Stage
Syracuse was defeated by Pittsburgh in its most recent outing last Tuesday, 80-69. The Orange made 14 3-pointers, the most for the Orange since making 17 on Jan. 5, 2022, against Miami. Chris Bell hit a season-high seven triples on his way to scoring 23 points, with J.J. Starling knocking down three shots from beyond-the-arc as part of a 14-point effort.
NC State picked up an impressive home victory over Wake Forest on Saturday, 85-73, behind 24 points by Paul McNeil and 22 from Dontrez Styles. The Wolfpack have won two of their last three ACC contests, as they also defeated Boston College at the Lenovo Center on Feb. 15. Prior to that victory over the Eagles, NC State had lost nine consecutive conference outings. Â
The Wolfpack are led by eighth-year head coach Kevin Keatts, who guided NC State to the ACC Tournament title and an NCAA Final Four berth in 2023-24. It was the first Final Four appearance for the Wolfpack since they won the 1983 national championship.  Â
The Syracuse-NC State Series
The Orange have won 14-of-21 meetings all-time against the Wolfpack and hold a 7-4 record against NC State at the Dome. However, the Wolfpack defeated Syracuse in the second round of last year's ACC Tournament, 83-65, on their way to winning the title. Prior to that loss, the Orange had won their previous six encounters with the Wolfpack.
Bell had a career day against NC State in last year's game at the Lenovo Center, knocking down eight triples and scoring a team-high 26 points in an 87-83 victory. The Orange also defeated NC State at the Dome last season, with Starling and Judah Mintz both scoring 20-plus in a 77-65 victory.
Starling Starring
Starling has scored 20-plus points in three of the last four games, as he tallied 28 in the triple overtime win over Boston College, scored 25 against Miami and poured in 22 versus North Carolina. He is averaging 22.3 points over the last four outings.Â
Starling surpassed 1,000 career points in Syracuse's victory at California earlier this month. The junior guard entered the night with 990 points and hit the 1,000 mark with a floater at the 15:09 mark of the second half. He finished that contest with 18 points. It took Starling 75 career games to reach the 1,000-point threshold, with the last 47 of those appearances coming with Syracuse after spending his freshman campaign at Notre Dame.
After missing seven games earlier this season due to injury, Syracuse's leading scorer has recorded double figures in 12 of his 14 appearances since rejoining the lineup. He is averaging 17.9 points per contest over that span.
Starling is averaging a team-best 18.5 points per outing on the campaign, the fourth most in the ACC this season through his 20 games played. His 38 points from the Orange's double-overtime victory against Youngstown State were a career high and the second most by any ACC player in a game this season.
Lampkin's Recent Leap
On Jan. 25 against Pittsburgh, Lampkin Jr. became the first Syracuse player to tally 23 rebounds in a game since Derrick Coleman did so against Villanova on March 10, 1990, at the Big East Tournament. Only two Syracuse players have grabbed more rebounds in a single game than Lampkin Jr. – Frank Reddout with 34 versus Temple on Feb. 9, 1952, and Dave Bing with 25 against Cornell on Feb. 8, 1966.
Lampkin's 23-rebound performance is one of the top 10 efforts on the glass in Syracuse history. Additionally, his 15 defensive rebounds versus the Panthers were the sixth most in a single game in Orange history, with the all-time Syracuse record sitting at 16. The 23 rebounds were also the most by any ACC player in a game since Armando Bacot also had 23 for North Carolina against James Madison on Nov. 20, 2022.
Against Duke earlier this month, Lampkin Jr. hit another career milestone, as he became the second Syracuse player in as many games to surpass 1,000 career points, joining Starling. Lampkin Jr. reached the mark with a layup at the 2:05 mark of the first half. After spending the first four seasons of his career at TCU and Colorado, where he totaled the first 776 points of his career, he has notched 225 this season with the Orange. Lampkin Jr. reached 1,000 points in his 127th career appearance, the last 23 of which have come with Syracuse.
Lampkin Jr. is averaging 10.9 rebounds over the past 17 contests and has posted a double-double in eight of the last 13 outings. For the season, Lampkin Jr. is averaging 10.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Ring The Bell
Bell sparked Syracuse's best 3-point shooting performance of the season last Tuesday against Pittsburgh, as he knocked down seven shots from beyond-the-arc, his season best and just one short of his career high. He went 7-of-12 on 3-pointers, with four of the makes coming in the first half. Four more Orange players connected on at least one triple, with Starling (3) and Lucas Taylor (2) making multiple. Jaquan Carlos and Petar Majstorovic hit one apiece.
Â
This was the fourth time this season Syracuse has made double-digit 3-pointers in a game. The Orange also attempted 33 shots from beyond-the-arc against Pittsburgh, the most for Syracuse in a game since taking 34 in a double-overtime affair versus Indiana on Nov. 30, 2021, and the most in a contest that ended in regulation since the Orange shot 38 against Pittsburgh on Jan. 6, 2021.
Â
Crashing The Glass
As a team, Syracuse grabs 37.8 rebounds per contest, the third most in the ACC. The Orange boast a plus-3.2 margin on the season and have recorded double-digit offensive boards 16 times on the campaign, including in each of the last six games.
Three different Syracuse players have pulled down 10 or more rebounds in a game this season – Lampkin Jr. (14 times), Donnie Freeman (seven times) and Davis (one time). Lampkin is third in the conference in rebounding (9.3 per game) and has double-digit boards in 12 of the last 16 outings.
Scouting NC State
The Wolfpack have three players averaging double figures this season, led by Marcus Hill, whose 12.1 points per game are a team best. Jayden Taylor (11.8) and Styles (10.6) also average double digits and are tied for the team lead with 40 made 3-pointers.
Styles is also NC State's leading rebounder, as his 4.9 boards per contest slightly beat out Brandon Huntley-Hatfield's 4.8. Ben Middlebrooks (4.2) and Hill (4.0) also average four-plus rebounds per contest. Michael O'Connell is pacing the Wolfpack in both assists (94) with Middlebrooks leading the team in blocks (38). O'Connell's 3.4 assist to turnover ratio is the second best in the ACC while Middlebrooks ranks No. 5 in the conference in blocks. Taylor is pacing the Wolfpack with 40 steals.
As a team, the Wolfpack boast the sixth best scoring defense in the conference, allowing just 69.9 points per contest. NC State has the best turnover margin in the ACC (3.22) and is No. 6 in assist to turnover ratio (1.34). They area also No. 5 in the conference in blocks (106).
