The first week of classes is filled with stories of what students did during the summer months. Not many narratives could match Emma Muchnick's from last summer when she helped the United States win the gold medal at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women's U20 Championship in Hong Kong, China.
The Suffern, New York native was one of 22 players named to the national team in early July. The squad held a training camp in Northern California in August before heading to Asia for the tournament where 20 teams competed for the title.
"I'd found out that I made the team a week after the tryout," Muchnick said. "I got a call from Coach Tim (McCormack) and he called me and I was in my kitchen and it was super exciting. Obviously, I didn't know what he was going to say so you're not sure if it's going to be good news or bad news, but he had told me that I made it and I was super excited."
The United States dominated the tournament, winning all seven of its games by a combined total of 211-20. Muchnick recorded a goal and a draw control in the gold medal game against Canada. She finished the tournament with 18 points on 15 goals and three assists. Her best performance came in the playoff opener against Puerto Rico. Muchnick scored two goals and dished out two assists and was named Player of the Match.
"Winning the gold medal is a crazy feeling," Muchnick said. "Just pure joy from everyone around us – our whole team, the coaches. Afterward, it was just like this huge excitement kind of flooded over everybody. This was just a really awesome moment that we could all celebrate together."
Now, Muchnick is using those experiences she gained on the international stage on the field this season for the Orange. She has played in all five games, making four starts, and is tied for second on the team in goals with 10. Muchnick needs just five more to set a new career high. She has scored multiple goals in four games, including top-10 matchups against Maryland and Northwestern. In addition, Muchnick was selected as one of four team captains for the 2025 season.
As the calendar turned to spring, Muchnick's focus once again became helping Syracuse win its first national championship. But those two months spent with Team USA are never forgotten.
"Thankfully, I've gotten the chance to play with the USA development program in the past, but something just felt really different about this experience," Muchnick said. "It felt really surreal. I was so grateful that I got reached out to, and the idea that I'm representing my home, my family, my college, my coaches was just something I'll never forget."
