CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Fresh off a top-10 win, Syracuse University men's lacrosse swept the ACC weekly honors, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced Tuesday afternoon.
After taking down No. 7 Johns Hopkins 13-10 at the JMA Wireless Dome on Sunday, Owen Hiltz was tabbed as the ACC Offensive Player of the Week while Jimmy McCool was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Hiltz put up five points, racking four goals and one assist. The Peterborough, Ontario, Canada product scored on all four shots on goal, boosting Syracuse's goal total to four more than Johns Hopkins allowed on average entering the rivalry showdown. The redshirt senior captain scored twice in the first quarter before having a hand in three of the final Syracuse goals in the final frame. Hiltz scored a go-ahead goal at 8:13 of the fourth before the Blue Jays tied things up at 10-10. Hiltz then connected with Luke Rhoa at 6:49 of the first for what stood as the game-winning goal before Hiltz put away an insurance goal just 30 seconds later.
McCool made a dozen saves in the first top 10 win of his career. After allowing four goals in the first quarter, the Boston, Massachusetts native dialed it in, holding Hopkins to just two goals in each of the second, third and fourth quarters. McCool made five of his saves in the second half, including four in the decisive fourth quarter and backstopped a man-down unit that surrendered just one goal on five Johns Hopkins opportunities.
Syracuse has a bye weekend before returning to the JMA Wireless Dome for a pair of games next week. Leading off, the Orange host Manhattan on Tuesday, March 18 for a 7 p.m. showdown on ACC Network Extra before taking on No. 15 Colgate on ACC Network Extra Saturday, March 22 with a noon start.
Single-game and a new Anytime Ticket package are available on Cuse.com/tickets.
