Graduate student Eddie Lampkin Jr. turned in his 14th double-double of the campaign with 25 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Syracuse (13-18, 7-13 ACC) to an 84-70 Senior Day victory against Virginia (15-16, 8-12 ACC)Â at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday night.
Â
The double-double tied Lampkin with Jesse Edwards (2022-23) for the most in a season by a Syracuse player since the start of the 2014-15 campaign. He went 11-of-12 from the field on the night en route to his fourth 20-plus point performance of the regular season.
Â
Senior Lucas Taylor and graduate student Jyare Davis both added 15 points in the victory, with Davis also notching four assists. The Orange outrebounded Virginia, 31-17, on the night, and registered assists on 20-of-31 made field goals.Â
The triumph earned the Orange the 14th seed in the upcoming ACC Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. Syracuse will face 11th-seeded Florida State on Tuesday night.
Â
How The Game Was Decided
Behind stellar shooting and a dominant interior presence, the Orange established a commanding 17-point halftime advantage, 43-26. The emphatic start was pivotal for Syracuse, which never saw its lead dip below 13 throughout the entirety of the second period.
Â
Syracuse made 58-percent (18-of-31) of its attempts from the field in the opening 20 minutes, with Lampkin pacing the Orange behind 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Davis also hit double figures in the frame with 10 points. Of Syracuse's 18 first-half baskets, 12 came via assists, with Jaquan Carlos (five) and Davis (four) leading the way for the Orange.
Â
The Orange controlled the paint in the opening frame, outscoring the Cavaliers, 24-16, down low. Syracuse also finished the half with a 19-10 rebounding advantage, with seven of the 19 coming on the offensive glass. Lampkin pulled down a team-best seven boards in the first half.
Â
Taylor Time
Taylor propelled the Orange offensively early in the second half. He knocked down a triple on Syracuse's first possession out of the intermission to push the Orange ahead by 20, their largest lead of the contest. With 16:51 on the clock, he connected on a pull-up jumper, and on the ensuing Orange possession following a Lampkin block, he made another 3-pointer to extend the Syracuse margin back to 19 points, 54-35.
Â
With 5:41 to go in regulation, Taylor hit a corner basket while fading away as the shot clock expired to grow Syracuse's lead back to 17 points, 72-55. Taylor joined Lampkin as the only two Syracuse scorers to reach double figure totals in the second half. Taylor reached double-digit points for the second straight outing. Â
Â
Lights Out Lampkin
Lampkin was the focal point of Syracuse's offense in the opening eight minutes, as he scored 10 of the first 17 points for the Orange. He made 5-of-6 field goal attempts during that stretch, all of which were layups and dunks. The center added two more baskets before halftime to lead the Orange in both points (14) and boards (seven) entering the intermission.
Â
He continued his strong play into the second half, as he again led Syracuse with 11 points after the break. He was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field in the final 20 minutes and secured a double-double with his 10th rebound of the night with 2:38 remaining.
Â
The 25 points were just one shy of his career best, which he set last month against North Carolina at the Dome. The 11 made field goals were also his most ever in a game, surpassing his previous high of nine, which also came last month versus the Tar Heels.
Â
Notable Numbers
The Orange will compete next week at the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina, as the No. 14 seed. Syracuse will open the event on Tuesday against No. 11 seed Florida State, who defeated the Orange in their lone clash of the regular season, 90-74, in Tallahassee.
