#7 Florida State (6-0-1, 2-0-0) had three separate goalscorers and the Seminoles defeated Syracuse (4-2-4, 0-1-1), 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the SU Soccer Stadium.
Florida State now owns a 8-0-1 series advantage over the Orange, improving to 4-0-1 at Syracuse in the series.
HOW THE MATCH WAS DECIDED
After a back-and-forth first half, the Seminoles finally found the breakthrough on the brink of halftime.Â
At the 42:43 mark, fifth-year midfielder Marianyela Jimenez picked up the ball outside the box and played it through multiple Syracuse defenders. It found sophomore midfielder Peyton Nourse, who played a back-heel flick to sophomore forward Solai Washington, who tucked her right-footed effort into the bottom-left corner of the net.Â
ORANGE COME CLOSE
At the 33:48 mark of the first half, Syracuse came close to tallying first. From a corner, senior Maya McDermott played a curling right-footed cross that found the head of senior forward Mia Klammer. Klammer put a powerful header on target, but her attempt went right into the hands of freshman goalkeeper Evan O'Steen.Â
SEMINOLE STUNNERS
Florida State found a pair of goals in quick succession early into the second half, both coming off of strong build-up play. At the 52:56 mark, junior forward Jordynn Dudley played a through ball towards senior midfielder/forward Enasia Colon near the right corner of the Syracuse end. Colon whipped in a cross to freshman defender Mya Brandon, who rifled a header past goalkeeper Shea Vanderbosch.Â
Just seven minutes later, the Seminoles found a third goal of the match. Dudley once again found Colon on the right edge of the box, and Colon drove a ball across the face of the Syracuse goal. Sophomore forward Wrianna Hudson was in perfect position to pass the ball into the net, making the score 3-0 in favor of Florida State.Â
VANDERBOSCH LIMITS DAMAGE
It appeared as though the Seminoles would find their fifth goal of the match at the 85:12 mark. Freshman forward Ashlyn Anderson dribbled past multiple Syracuse defenders and fired a shot on goal from just outside the six-yard box. Vanderbosch dove acrobatically to her right to deny the point-blank effort, forcing the ball out for a corner.Â
NOTABLE NUMBERS
The Orange finish out a five-game home stand when they host #5 Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7:00 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.Â
