
'Cuse Takes Down Fordham at Drumlins

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Opening the season with a second-straight win, Syracuse University women's tennis toppled visiting Fordham 6-1 Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.
Sunday's win was the second in as many days for the Orange, who swept Cornell 7-0 on Saturday.
Syracuse (2-0) picked up the doubles point as the pairing of Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva finished first and took down Nevena Kolarevic and Julianne Nguyen 6-3. Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 decision over Valerija Kargina and Lily Chitambar. The Fordham pair of Paola Dalmonico and Catalina Padilla won the third flight of doubles 7-5 over Syracuse's Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier.
In singles action, Wojcik went 6-2, 6-1 over Chitambar for the next Syracuse point. Knezkova bumped the lead to 3-0 with her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Valerija Kargina. Haram Kim scored the deciding point with a 7-5, 6-4 win at number six singles.
Sysoeva battled at number two singles before coming away with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 decision over Dalmonico to push the Orange lead to 5-0. At number five singles, Bennetto dropped a thriller against Aya Matsunaga, who won 7-5, 4-6, 10-6.
The longest bout of the day was at number one singles between Shastova and Kolarevic. Shastova won the first set 6-3 before Kolarevic won the second 6-1. The pair battled in the third set before the top-flight player for Syracuse won 7-5 to seal the 6-1 victory for the Orange.
Syracuse is idle until the end of the month before a trip to Florida. The Orange take on Florida Atlantic on January 30 before heading to face Florida International on February 1, the first of two trips to the city of Miami for Syracuse this season.
