Senior Nate Kingz converted a contested layup in the final seconds to give the Orange a 79-78 lead, and Syracuse (15-11, 6-7 ACC) held off SMU (17-8, 6-6) in a comeback victory at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday afternoon.
Â
Sophomore Donnie Freeman paced the Orange attack with 18 points and added a career-high four blocks. Senior Naithan George posted 16 points, while freshman Kiyan Anthony tied his ACC scoring high with 13 points off the bench. The Orange made 11 3-pointers, equaling a season high.

Â
How the Game Was Decided
With just under four minutes left on the clock and the Orange trailing 76-72, sophomore Tyler Betsey drilled a 3-pointer to pull the Orange within one point. After Corey Washington missed a 3-point attempt at the other end, Betsey grabbed the rebound and hit George in transition for a basket to give Syracuse a 77-76 lead with 3:18 to go.
Â
The Mustangs pulled back ahead when Jaden Toombs hit a jumper. Kingz missed a layup on the other end, but Freeman kept SMU from extending the lead any further with his career-high fourth rejection on a Washington layup attempt.
Â
After Toombs put the Mustangs ahead with 2:43 to go, neither team scored for over two minutes. With 39 ticks left, the Mustangs had the ball and turned to Boopie Miller, who missed a floater before Betsey snared another rebound to give Syracuse a final possession.
Following a Syracuse timeout with 13 second left, George found Kingz on the perimeter who drove and scored to put the Orange up 79-78 with two seconds left to play. The SMU full-court heave came up empty, and Syracuse held on to win.
