Orange Drop Road Match at No. 19 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 4-0 to No. 19 Duke at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
The Orange (4-5) fell behind early after the Blue Devils started hot in doubles action. Aspen Schuman and Irina Balus knocked off Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik 6-1 to claim the first doubles match. Liv Hovde and Ava Krug secured the doubles point for Duke, claiming a 6-2 win over Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier. The heavyweight matchup at the No. 1 doubles spot featuring No. 20 ranked Anastasia Sysoeva and Nelly Knezkova squaring off with No. 39 Eleana Yu and Claire An was deadlocked at 3-3 when it was called.
Balus, the No. 22 ranked singles player in the nation, dispatched Shastova 6-2, 6-3 to open singles play. Schuman defeated Wojcik 6-3, 6-2 to claim a third point for the Blue Devils. An secured the deciding fourth point for Duke, narrowly edging Emma Scaldalai 7-5, 6-3. Sysoeva forced a third set at No. 2 singles against Hovde, but the match went unfinished.
Syracuse heads to Massachusetts next Saturday to face Boston College at 5 p.m. The match will take place at the Weymouth Club.
