SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team bounced back from a narrow defeat to UMass, handling visiting Boston University 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club.
The Orange (3-3) started the afternoon off strong by claiming the doubles point. Constance Levivier and Leena Bennetto got things started, defeating Emily Zhao and Madison Liu 6-3. Syracuse's Nelly Knezkova and Anastasia Sysoeva secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Nancy Liu and Vasilisa Borisova. The Orange pairing of Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik were deadlocked at 5-5 with Blanka Demicheli and Rhea Rai when the match was stopped.
In singles action, Sysoeva was flawless at number two, going 6-0, 6-0 to knock off Ellie Gyuro for the first singles point. Wojcik battled but could not overcome Borisova, losing 4-6, 4-6. Bennetto picked up a third point for the Orange, defeating Zhao 6-4, 6-2. Shastova dropped the match in the number one position, falling 4-6, 3-6 to N. Liu. Knezkova claimed the decisive point for the Orange, defeating M. Liu 6-2, 7-5 at the number three position. Emma Scaldalai won the fifth and final point of the day, dispatching Demicheli 7-5, 7-6.
Syracuse returns to Drumlins Country Club on Thursday for a 3 p.m. clash with in-state rival Buffalo. Thursday's action will be carried on Cuse.tv with live stats on Cuse.com.
