The Syracuse volleyball team defeated Canisius in the Flower City Invite in Rochester by a score of three sets to none. The Orange improve to 4-3 on the season while the Golden Griffins fall to 0-8.

Kiernan Stamey and Emma Williams shared the team lead with 10 kills apiece, with Williams ending the match with a .421 hitting percentage. Keila Gabriel was right behind with 9 kills on a .300 clip. Charis Burge orchestrated the offense with 29 assists. Yuka Urano paced the Orange defensively with 15 digs.

Syracuse's defense held Canisius to a .079 hitting percentage as a team and out-serving the Griffins with 8 aces to their 7. The Orange finished with 6 total team blocks, with Abby Nicholson leading the way with 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange answered an early run from Canisius in set one, rallying four straight points behind a pair of Yuka Urano aces to grab a 4-2 lead. After the two teams traded to a 5-5 tie, Syracuse used a three-point service run from Charis Burge, capped by two aces, to push the lead to 15-8. The Orange closed out the frame on a 10-4 spurt, with back-to-back kills from Abby Nicholson sealing a 25-15 win.

Canisius started set two with an early lead before Syracuse tied the set 14-14. The Griffins regained the lead at 15-14 and later broke away with four straight points to lead 20-16. Syracuse answered with a six-point run of its own, going up 22-20, and after Canisius tied it at 22-22, the Orange closed it out on a Charis Burge service sequence and a final Williams kill for a 25-23 win.

The Orange built an early cushion behind kills from Keila Gabriel and Kiernan Stamey in set three and never trailed by more than a point the rest of the way. Canisius made a late push, but a Griffins service error ended the match and completed the sweep, 25-19.

NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Kiernan Stamey and Emma Williams both finished with a team-high 10 kills. Williams hit a single-game career-high .421.
Keila Gabriel added 9 kills on .300 hitting to go with 2 service aces.
Charis Burge ran the Syracuse attack with 29 assists, adding 9 digs and 2 blocks.
