Goin, Eiselin Secure the First Home Win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University field hockey needed every bit of 75 minutes and then a shootout to open its home schedule, outlasting UMass Lowell 3-2 Friday afternoon in front of 315 fans at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Syracuse (5-1) built a lead twice and had it erased twice before Jessie Eiselin and the Orange took over in the shootout, converting three of four attempts while Eiselin turned aside three of five UMass Lowell tries.

Sammie Goin opened the scoring for the Orange in the 14th minute and Taylor Bigbie put Syracuse back in front in the 43rd, with both goals coming off second chances on penalty corner sequences. Bigbie tipped her goal in at the line Eiselin went the distance in goal, making two saves across regulation and overtime before her work in the shootout decided the afternoon.

UMass Lowell (3-4, 0-0 America East) answered each time. Alice Van Hemelen scored her second goal of the season in the 17th minute, and Mae Kemps evened things in the 52nd on an assist from Audrey Carter for her first of the year. The River Hawks split time in net, with Veerle Mous making four saves over 30 minutes and Megan MacMiller adding four more across 45 minutes for eight total.

How it Happened

Aubrey Turner tested the River Hawks in the opening 90 seconds with a shot that sailed wide, setting the tone for a Syracuse attack that would generate 19 shots.
Syracuse cashed in on its first penalty corner in the 14th minute. Grace Anne McCooey delivered the insert, a Jess Liddell strike was blocked in front, and Goin cleaned up the loose ball for a 1-0 lead.
UMass Lowell responded with back-to-back corners early in the second quarter, the second of which produced a Carter shot that Eiselin stopped. The pressure paid off in the 17th minute when Van Hemelen found the equalizer.
The Orange dominated the middle of the game without reward. Turner rang the post in the 26th minute, and Liddell was denied twice by Mous on consecutive penalty corners in the 29th.
Jovie Weaver hit the post 45 seconds into the third quarter, and Liddell found iron again in the 43rd before Bigbie broke through at 42:31. After the initial Liddell drive was saved, Hattie Madden took a swing that banged off the post. Beatty collected the rebounded shot and put a chance goalward before Bigbie tipped the ball in at the line for a 2-1 Syracuse edge.
UMass Lowell drew level in the 52nd minute as Carter fed Kemps for the tying goal, and Rena Pistilli nearly won it in the 56th on a corner chance that Eiselin stopped.
Neither side scored in overtime, with Turner's attempt in the 68th minute the only shot of the extra session.
In the shootout, Eiselin stopped Van Hemelen and Carter before Bo Madden, Taylor Bigbie and Goin all converted against Mous. Eiselin's stop on Karli Penrod ended it.

Behind the Numbers

Syracuse outshot UMass Lowell 19-9 and held a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, while the River Hawks held a slim 6-5 edge in penalty corners.
Turner and Liddell each fired six shots, with Liddell putting four on goal. The Orange struck the post three times.
Eiselin logged 75 minutes, allowing two goals on nine UMass Lowell attempts before her three shootout stops.

Up Next for Syracuse

The Orange open ACC play next Friday, September 25, traveling to Charlottesville to face Virginia.
The trip begins a stretch of three straight road conference games, with Wake Forest on September 27 and Duke on October 2 to follow.
