Chris Fox - Head Coach
"We really believe that the Syracuse and Central New York areas offer a great opportunity to be very strong in the distance events,” Gross said. “In addition Syracuse has a strong history and tradition in the track & field program. Having Chris as a specialist in distance will make a huge impact in all areas – cross country, and indoor and outdoor track & field. His background in the sport is well documented. He brings expertise and class and fits perfectly into the Syracuse athletics vision. We look forward to having championship years with Chris at the helm. Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director Mark Jackson ran the search and did a wonderful job bringing in top candidates for consideration."
In 2004, both a male and female cross country runner competed in the NCAA Championships, a first for the Auburn program. The men’s team also received a national ranking, the first time that had happened in over 20 years.
Auburn has enjoyed national success with Fox on the coaching staff. In 2003, both the indoor and outdoor track and field teams finished second at the NCAA Championships. Last season, the indoor track and field team finished fourth in the nation, while the outdoor team placed ninth.
At Auburn, Fox coached numerous student-athletes to national recognition. During Fox’s tenure, the Tigers produced two Academic All-Americans, two cross country All-Americans, 14 NCAA track and field All-Americans, two Southeast Conference (SEC) cross country individual champions, and three SEC track and field individual champions.
“This is a great opportunity to be the head coach of one of the premier schools in the east. All the resources are here for us to be a national level program and that is where we plan to be in the next three years,” Fox said.
In 2004-05, Fox coached a 2004 Olympian and a 2005 World Championship qualifier in the men’s 800. He also served as the NCAA Regional Championship Meet Director in 2004.
Fox not only excelled as a coach at Auburn, but as an athlete as well. Fox holds the school record in the 5000m indoors (13:44.73) and outdoors (13:34.14) and is also among the top five performers in the 3000m indoors and the 10,000m outdoors.
After graduating from Auburn in 1983 with a degree in psychology, Fox was hired as the head cross country and distance coach at North Carolina. While there, Fox’s 1985 men’s team won the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. For his efforts, Fox was named ACC Coach of the Year. He coached at North Carolina for two seasons before leaving to pursue his athletic career.
From 1987-1994, Fox was a member of the Nike-Athletics West team. He also competed at the national and world level with Brooks Sports from 1995-1998. In those stints, Fox ran the mile in 3:59.10, the 5000m in 13:21, the 10,000m in 27:53, and the marathon in 2:13.40. Fox competed in five Olympic Trials from 1980-1996.
Fox also spent a year on the George Washington staff as the head coach of the cross country team in 1994-95 before competing for Brooks Sports.
Fox is married to the former Kristy Johnson of Coos Bay, Oregon. They have one daughter, McKenzie, who is a junior at Auburn.
Enoch Borozinski - Assistant Coach, Throws, Jumps, & Multi-Events
Borozinski served as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Nevada-Reno from 1993-95 and as a volunteer assistant at the University of Nevada Las Vegas from 1999-2002. Most recently, he worked as an assistant coach at Coronado High School in Nevada directing the school’s hurdlers and pole vaulters. During his coaching career, Borozinski has mentored Ali McKnight, a two-time Olympic Trials competitor in the heptathlon and a member of the 1999 U.S. bobsled team. He also coached Janel Chandler, the 1995 and 1997 Big West Conference heptathlon champion. As a competitor for the University of Nevada-Reno, Borozinski was the 1994 NCAA Division I national champion in the decathlon and was the named the 1994 Big West Conference Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year. He also earned the bronze medal at the 1993 Olympic Festival in the event. A Scottsdale, Ariz. native, Borozinski earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Nevada-Reno in 1995 and he is currently working on a master’s degree in education. He currently is USATF Level II certified in Jumps and has just recently completed the same for throws.
Brien Bell - Assistant Coach, Recruiting Coordinator, Middle Distance/Distance Brien Bell enters his first year as an assistant coach on the cross country/track & field program. Bell will serve as the middle distance and distance coach, and will also serve as the recruiting coordinator for SU.
Bell comes to Syracuse after spending four seasons as the assistant men’s and women’s track and field/cross country coach at La Salle University. At La Salle, he assisted the head coach in the training of student-athletes, served as the head recruiting coordinator, and completed other administrative and organizational work.
While with La Salle, the Explorers garnered many accolades. In cross country, La Salle totaled seven Atlantic 10 championships, four with the men and three with the women. Individually, La Salle produced five A-10 individual champions under Bell’s guidance. The team also produced 43 All-Conference performers during his tenure, while the men’s team earned a national ranking in 2004.
In indoor track, Bell helped produce an A-10 champion in 2003 for the men. The Explorers also had four Most Outstanding Performers and 36 conference champions.
In outdoor track, Bell coached two A-10 Most Outstanding Performers, 26 conference champions, 11 Junior National All-Americans, and an NCAA automatic qualifier in the men’s 10k in 2005.
Bell graduated for La Salle University in 1999 with a degree in history while competing all four years for the Explorers. He also earned his master’s there in 2004 in professional communication. Bell and his wife, Toni, reside in Syracuse.
Dave Hegland - Assistant Coach, Sprints and Hurdles Dave Hegland joined the Syracuse staff in 2004 to assist with the team's sprinters and hurdlers. He received his bachelor's in mathematics from South Dakota State University in 2004. Hegland holds the SDSU school records in the 60-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles. He was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American District VII selection. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in education. Danielle Morrell - Assistant Coach, Cross Country & Distance Danielle Morrell joined the Syracuse staff in August 2004 to assist in coaching cross country and distance runners. Morrell is a 2003 graduate of the University of Southern Cailfornia, where she received her bachelor's degree in kinesiology. She co-captained the USC cross country team her senior year and was a two-time scholar athlete. Morrell is currently pursuing her master's degree in exercise science at Syracuse. In addition to helping out with the cross country and distance runners, Morrell attends to the administrative duties for the cross country and track & field program. |







Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross named Chris Fox as the new head cross country and track and field coach. Fox comes to Syracuse after serving as the head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at Auburn University for the past four years. With Fox’s assistance last season, the men’s track and field squad finished with a No. 9 national ranking. Fox replaces Andrew Roberts who led the program from 1997 through 2005.
