Shumpert hit for 20 of his markers in the second half. He connected on 10-of-11 free throws in the game, including a 7-of-8 effort after the intermission. Shumpert also connected on six-of-eight three-point attempts.
The Orangemen jumped out to a 22-6 advantage in the game’s first seven minutes. DeShaun Williams tallied 10 of his 15 points during that span. The SU margin was narrowed to 45-36 at the intermission but an early 18-4, second-half stretch pushed the lead to 21 at 63-42. Shumpert had 10 points, including two three-pointers, in the first 3:15 of the second period.
The Blue Demons chipped away at the margin and pulled within six points twice in the final two minutes before the outcome was decided.
Allen Griffin had career-highs of 20 points and eight assists while committing only three turnovers in 40 minutes of play. Damone Brown rounded out the double-digit scorers for Syracuse with 16 points.
The Orange defense forced 18 Blue Demon turnovers.
