Coach Boeheim Postgame Quotes
Syracuse vs. Georgetown Men’s Basketball
February 24, 2002
Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.
Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim’s opening remarks following the game:
“I think for the last number of games, including the last two that we won, we’re getting pretty much the shots we’d like to get. We just have not shot the ball well at all. We’re struggling. At halftime, I didn’t know how we were even in the game. I didn’t think we should have been in the game at halftime. But we’re battling pretty good. Our defense was pretty good. We did a pretty good job on the boards throughout the game. Kueth has played well in practice with that guard on, but today it was like he couldn’t play. When we finally made a couple of shots, and we’re right in the game. But, you’ve really got to make more than a couple of shots. We’re not going to win games shooting the ball like this. I’m not sure even how we won the last two games, shooting 34, 35 percent from the field, shooting 23 or 22 percent from the three. We’re getting looks, we’re getting good shots. We’re going to have to start making them if we’re going to be effective down the stretch. We can’t rebound much better. We can’t battle any better than we did. We’re just not going to win games shooting the ball like this.”
Boeheim on the ceremony before the game in which the Carrier Dome court was named after him:
“It’s a great honor. I’m pleased. It’s just difficult during the season because you’re concentrating on the games. That’s what we’re doing. We’re here to try to win basketball games. That’s the only thing we think about during the season. But it’s been great seeing all these guys come back and it’s a great honor.”
Boeheim on the way his team played against Georgetown:
“We have three guys that we depend on to score and we gear things through them and I thought today especially more so than any day, our other guys played great. Craig and Jeremy had tremendous first halves, played well throughout the game, so did Hakim and Josh. James had his best game. Our leadership has got to play. They’ve got to be ready to go and play. I just didn’t think mentally, not just shooting the ball, but just the overall carriage of what those veteran guys have got to do, just wasn’t there today and that’s disappointing at this stage of the season.
Boeheim on James Thues’ looking more for his shot: “When no one else was making anything, he hit a couple early and he felt comfortable and he made a couple huge shots that got us back in the game. We were out of the game at least twice and he got us back in there once. A couple of other guys made good plays that got us back in the other times, but he had a tremendous game.”
