Syracuse Game Notes
November 22, 2003
Syracuse, N.Y. • Carrier Dome
R.J. Anderson completed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Johnnie Morant on SU's second possession of the game. The play was Syracuse's first pass play for a score longer than 70 yards since Troy Nunes threw a 78-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Jackson against Virginia Tech in 2000. The reception was the longest of Morant's career. His previous best was a 74-yard catch against Tennessee in 2001. Morant's reception extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one catch to 27. It was the seventh touchdown reception of his career.
Morant's touchdown catch in the first quarter was the first play of the drive and took just 14 seconds off the clock. It was the fastest SU scoring drive of the season. The previous mark was 20 seconds when Morant caught a 48-yard touchdown pass at North Carolina.
Morant finished the game with 151 yards on seven receptions. It marked his third game with 100-or-more receiving yards this season (160 vs. North Carolina, 141 vs. Louisville).
Marcus Clayton returned West Virginia's first punt of the second quarter 56 yards for his first career touchdown. It marked the first time an SU player returned a punt for a touchdown since Jamel Riddle returned a punt 51 yards to the endzone against Virginia Tech in 2001. It was the longest punt return of Clayton's career.
Walter Reyes left the game in the first quarter with a left knee injury, but returned to the lineup at the beginning of the second half. He caught one pass for a gain of seven yards and rushed once for a gain of two yards before being sidelined. After his return, he rushed for 61 yards, including a 33-yard run in the third quarter.
Brendan Carney recorded his first career tackle when he stopped Adam Jones on a punt return in the first quarter. It marked the first time this season that a kicker has recorded a tackle on special teams.
Kellen Pruitt recorded his third interception of the season with 4:15 left in third quarter to give SU the ball on its own seven-yard line. His previous picks came against Temple and during the second overtime of SU's win against North Carolina.
