Senior Florida natives Alex Shor and Tommy Harris served as game captains for today’s contest and accompanied 2005 team captains James Wyche and Steve Franklin to midfield for the coin toss.
Brendan Carney eclipsed the 6,000-yard mark in career punting yards with a 51-yard boot in the first quarter. He is fifth on SU’s all-time punt yardage list with 6,275 yards. Carney also has 148 career punts, including the 51-yarder, which is the seventh-most all-time at SU.
He kicked a career-high 71-yard punt in the third quarter, which was tied for the third-longest in school history. It was two yards short of tying the school record.
His nine kicks versus the Seminoles were tied for the third-most in a game by an SU punter.
Steve Gregory intercepted his sixth career pass in the first quarter. He has 39 career pass breakups, which including the interception, ranks third on SU’s career passes defended list. It also marks the second straight game he has picked off a pass.
Damien Rhodes passed the 500-yard mark in receiving yards for his career on a 15-yard catch in the third quarter. Rhodes generated 117 of all-purpose yards on Saturday, moving him into ninth all-time. He passed SU legend Ernie Davis and James Mungro.
Perry Patterson’s first quarter fumble, which was recovered by Florida State, marked the first time an SU player has lost a fumble this season.
Patterson rushed for a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter. It was his third rushing score of the year and marked the first points Florida State allowed in the second half of a game in 2005.
Xavier Lee’s 75-yard pass to Kenny O’Neil in the fourth quarter was the longest pass completion the Orange defense has allowed this season. Drew Weatherford’s 71-yard touchdown pass to Lorenzo Booker in the third quarter was first 70-plus yard touchdown pass by an opponent since the 2004 season opener at Purdue (Kyle Orton to Brian Hare for a 75-yard TD).
Attendance at today’s game was 83,717. It was the most fans SU has played in front of since Sept. 1, 2001 at Tennessee (107,725).
James Wyche forced his second fumble of the season. Kellen Pruitt recovered it. It was Pruitt’s first fumble recovery this season and the fourth of his career. It was SU’s 12th take away of 2005.
Anthony Smith recorded the first sack of his career on the final play of the first half.
Stephen McDonald made his first career reception with an 11-yard grab in the third quarter.
McDonald had an 11-yard carry in the fourth quarter, the longest of his career.
Syracuse gave up seven sacks versus the Seminoles. It was the first time since Nov. 9, 2002 versus Virginia Tech that the Orange surrendered more than six.
Kareem Jones had a career-high two catches for a personal-best 21 yards.
Nick Chestnut caught his first career pass in the fourth quarter for a 30-yard touchdown. It was the first touchdown of his career.
The Orange allowed a season-high 512 yards of total offense, the most since Georgia Tech racked up 514 yards of total offense versus the Orange in the 2005 Champ Sports Bowl.
