Opening Statement...
“I told the players before the game that Bucknell was a good basketball team. We gave them some points in the first half and from there we couldn’t get separation. Defensively we cannot stop people and that’s the concern right now.
We went the second half with our five and four men getting one rebound. I just told them in the locker that this is their time and they need to step up. They’ve got to rebound the basketball. We got some good penetration, we got some good shots on the rim, and we need to get those back and we’re not. We’re not getting in position but we cant play 20 minutes with Terence (Roberts) and Mookie (Daryl Watkins) getting one rebound we’re not going to beat anybody.
Bucknell is a very good team they’re going to score points and are going to get shots. We can’t not do a better job inside on the boards. We tried to go man to man with a smaller team, we didn’t let them hurt us with big guys we let them hurt us with dribble penetration and getting lay-ups and that shouldn’t happen with a smaller team that should be something we should be able to defend. We have a long ways to go which the Cornell game demonstrated certainly this game demonstrates, I think these teams are pretty good teams but Cornell lost by 12 or 14 points Penn State, a team that’s picked to be 10th or something in the BIG TEN. I think its about our team not the teams we’re playing, we’re not playing well enough.
On the defensive end we’re not rebounding the ball well enough from the inside guys and we’ve got to work hard and we have a lot of work ahead of us to get better. This is going to be a very difficult stretch this month where we have to work and play a lot of games and have to use these games to get better. I don’t think that there is a team we play that cant beat us if we don’t get better. We committed four offensive fouls tonight on charging, which we’ve talked about and guys continue to do that. I think Josh Wright came in and made some great plays and then throws the ball away and charges. Those are mistakes that we have to eliminate. We can’t afford those mistakes and we’re going to have to get better."
On Josh Wright...
“Josh went in because I thought he could make something happen, he made a couple great penetration plays, he’s a sophomore now, he cant make bad plays. He has to be a smart player, we can’t lose control. Our defense just wasn’t good enough."
On Gerry McNamara...
"He’s not getting many open looks. He had a couple tonight and he made them but he wont get many of them. They’re going to have a quick guy on him, it’s tough for him to get by in the lane in those situations. I think right now we’re asking too much of him and other guys need to make plays. Gerry is trying, he wants to win. He’s got a bunch of players around him who aren’t used to making those plays. He’s got to have more help offensively."
