Syracuse had an early 10-6 lead, but Maryland scored 29 unanswered points, including 22 in the second quarter, and never looked back. Turnovers were the difference as the Terrapins converted two Orange miscues into touchdowns, in the second, and last, Cherry Bowl game.
Terps quarterback Stan Gelbaugh threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third. He completed 14-of-20 passes for 223 yards. SU quarterback Don McPherson had 315 yards of total offense, rushing for 111 yards and passing for 204. Robert Drummond ran for 93 yards on 10 carries. Alvin Blount amassed 132 yards rushing for the Terps.
