1989 Peach Bowl
Dec. 30, 1989
Atlanta, Ga.
Syracuse capped off its third consecutive bowl season with a come-from-behind, 19-18 victory over Georgia in the Peach Bowl. John Biskup finished a wild SU rally with a 26-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining. The Orange defense held Georgia to four first downs and 84 total yards in the second half.
SU trailed 18-7 before quarterback Mark McDonald came off the bench to replace starter Bill Scharr. McDonald guided SU to a 32-yard Biskup field goal to close the third-quarter scoring. Clutch running by MVP Michael Owens (112 yards) and crisp passing by McDonald brought the Orange within striking distance. A 19-yard TD pass to Rob Moore cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 18-16 with just more than 10 minutes left, but a potential game-tying conversion attempt fell incomplete.
SU began its final drive from its own 27 with 3:37 to go. After moving to its own 43-yard line, the Orange faced a fourth-and-5. McDonald then hit Owens down the sideline for 29 yards and a crucial first down to set up Biskup’s game-winning kick.
