Coach Quentin Hillsman
Syracuse vs. Canisius College
December 22, 2006//Carrier Dome
Canisius shot 60 percent from 3-point land can you talk about your inability to defend the 3-point shot?
“When you get a lot of looks, you are going to make some. They have some good shooters on their team, but we missed some assignments today, and we didn’t get out there to contest their shots. When you get 27 points from behind the arch, it is tough to win a game.”
Conversely, you are normally a good shooting team, but you had a lot of open looks that were not converted. How much of a factor was that?
“It’s huge not being able to make shots. The last couple games we have been shooting in the twenties. We had open layups that we just didn’t make.”
This has been the characteristic of the last couple games, and there was an eight minute span with no points, how frustrating is that for you?
“Of course it is frustrating for a coach to watch your team not make shots, and I don’t know exactly what the reason is. We got open layups, and 12-foot shots, but when you’re not making, you wish you could say this is the reason, but I don’t exactly know. I’m not going to say it is San Juan, or our legs, I just don’t know.”
Canisius did a nice job on Nicole today, how big of a factor was that?
“Nicole is a freshaman, she has never had a defense plan just for her. We had a short turn around, and we did what we could. Its disappointing to give up that many three’s off inbounds plays. That was nine points right there, and that is hard to accept. Coming off a screen of the inbounds, I think those were the only three’s she made all game.”
You have a long break off before your next game, how will you start to prepare for the BIG EAST competition?
“Like we always do, we get in there and we prepare, we prepare, we prepare. They do a great job is preparation, and running our sets, just tonight was one of those nights where we got out there and it wasn’t sharp. We knew what would happen if we were not sharp, and I blame it on Canisius. They are a great team. Terry is a great coach, and he does a great job with his team. We knew it was going to be an aggressive battle. Some things didn’t bounce our way, but overall I love our kids, and they do what they are asked to do. One thing I do know is they give everything that have. That is what I have taught from my first day here, and I will teach that until my last day here, which is hopefully never.”
