Sophomore Curtis Brinkley made his first career start at running back against Wake Forest. He rushed eight times yards for 49 yards. Brinkley had a rush of 24 yards in the first quarter, the longest of his career.
The Orange offensive line featured four players that each made their first career start against the Demon Deacons. Junior Marvin McCall started at center, sophomore Ryan Durand started the game at right guard, and sophomores Corey Chavers and Eugene Newsome began the contest as SU’s offensive tackles. Arthur Kapalanga, J.J. Nesheiwat each received their first career starts in the contest as the Orange opened the game with two tight ends.
On defense, juniors Lee Williams and Jameel McClain made their first career starts at the defensive end positions. Joe Fields made his first start at free safety. Terrell Lemon also started for the first time at cornerback.
Senior quarterback Perry Patterson threw for 45 yards to move into sixth on the Orange’s all-time passing yardage list (3,400). He was 5-of-18 blank through the air and ranks sixth all-time with 303 career completions. His first-quarter touchdown pass to Rice Moss tied him for 10th in career touchdown passes (14).
Rice Moss caught his first career touchdown pass (20 yards) in the first quarter.
Kicker Patrick Shadle connected on his first career PAT following SU’s opening touchdown. With 50 seconds left in the half he drilled his first career field goal, a 46-yarder, to tie the score at 10-10. It was the longest field by an SU kicker since Collin Barber hit a 46-yarder against at Buffalo in 2004.
Redshirt freshman Mike Owen made his collegiate debut and made a tackle on the first play of his career.
Tony Fiametta received his first career carry in the first quarter and rushed three yards for a first down. His second career carry also resulted in a first down in the fourth quarter.
The Orange’s 86-yard scoring drive was the third-longest under head coach Greg Robinson and the longest scoring drive since an 89-yarder versus Cincinnati in 2005.
Brendan Carney’s first punt of the game, a 53-yarder, was the 200th of his career.
Taj Smith received his first career carry in the first quarter. It went for 11 yards.
Freshman Delone Carter became the first SU true freshman to play in 2006. He rushed for one yard on his first career carry. He rushed for six yards on five carries in the contest.
Walk-on Max Meisel fielded his first career punt as a punt returner in the game.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Gilbeaux made his first career appearance against Wake Forest and recorded his first tackle.
Senior linebacker Kelvin Smith finished with a personal-best 16 total tackles.
Nick Chestnut forced the first fumble of his career in the fourth quarter. The ball was recovered by Tanard Jackson, his second takeaway of the game and the third fumble recovery of his career.
Jeremy Horne made his first career appearance in the contest and returned a kick in the fourth quarter for 20 yards.
The loss was the Orange’s 10th straight, dating back to last season. It represents the longest losing streak in school history.
