Dick Finley was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1999. He is credited with being the first player to use the over-the-head and wrap checks, still prominent in today’s game. His use of shooting string also “broke new ground,” according to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.
Senior Year (1962): Selected as a first-team All-American…Played for the North in the North/South Collegiate All-Star game
Junior Year (1961): Selected as a third-team All-American
Sophomore Year (1960): Received honorable mention as an All-American
Personal: Played midfield at Freeport High School on Long Island…Member of the championship team in 1957…Selected first-team All-Long Island/All-Metro in 1957 and ’58…Transferred to SU after freshman year at Hofstra University…After SU, coached at Manlius Military Academy in 1963 and ’64…Coached at Freeport High School from 1965 to 1973; won a championship in 1968…Selected Man of the Year in 1971 for his contributions to lacrosse in Freeport… Inducted to the Long Island Metropolitan Chapter of US Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1988…Currently lives in Titusville, Fla.
