1999 Letterwinner of Distinction
John Schantz graduated fromSyracuse University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Engineering with a major in civil engineering. While a student at SU he was a member of the Air Force ROTC and the PSI Upsilon Fraternity. Schantz was awarded a varsity letter in boxing from 1954 – 1956. Upon graduation, Schantz served in the military from 1959 – 69. He was a fighter pilot in the USAF European Operations from 1961 – 64, a member of the NY Air Guard from 1965 – 71 and flew 265 combat missions in Vietnam . Upon completion of his military career, Schantz received 13 Air Medals and two Distinguished Flying Cross with Valor. Since 1965 Schantz has been president of the Schantz Homes, Inc. He has served as the director of the Syracuse Alumni Association, 1972 – 76, and has been a loyal contributor and member of the Orange Pack. He is the father of three graduates of Syracuse University and the son of Frank J. Schantz, who was also a Letterwinner of Distinction honoree.
