President of the Captains and Managers Honorary, Ferd Fournies was student-athlete representative to the Athletic Governing Board. He majored in psychology and achieved the rank of colonel in the ROTC.
Serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1955-1961, Ferd received his wings as a pilot with primary duty as an air transportation officer.
From 1961 to 1972, Ferd worked up through various levels of personnel management with such companies as Johnston &Johnston, McCrory Corporation and Savin Business Machines. In 1972 he started his own consulting firm, F. Fournies & Associates, Inc., which provides management consulting services and seminars to Fortune 500 companies worldwide. His book, Performance Appraisal Design Manual, has been called “the definitive work on the subject.” Ferd was an adjunct instructor for the Graduate School of Business at Fairleigh Dickinson University and was a guest lecturer for the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University for 15 years. He has also guest lectured for the SU College Center for Management and was named Outstanding Instructor by the American Institute of Banking (Tri-County Area). Ferd has authored Coaching for Improved Work Performances, Why Employees Don’t Do What They’re Supposed to Do and his latest book released in 1993, Why Customers Don’t Do what You Want Them to Do and What to Do About It, all published by McGraw-Hill. He also appears in three Bureau of Business Practice videos based on his work.
Fred has been active in such capacities as district finance chairman for the Boy Scouts of America; president of the Somerset County Mental Health Association; gymnastics instructor for the Somerset Valley YMCA; County Vocational and Technical School advisor; member of the board of directors and Personnel Committee and treasurer of a Crispus Atticus Community Center; member of the YMCA Educational Advisory Committee; and an actor and dancer in Little Theatre.
Ferd is a longtime contributor to Alumni Giving, the Orange Pack and the Varsity Club.
