SU began the 1999 season facing three top-10 teams. The Virginia Cavaliers traveled to the Carrier Dome for the season opener on March 6. Katrina Hable scored three goals and Clothilde Ewing added 11 saves, but Virginia prevailed 15-6.
After the opener, the Orange took to the road for a three-game trip, beginning with a difficult contest against No. 1 Maryland in College Park. SU lost 18-8 to the Terps before moving on to Washington D.C. to face No. 10 Georgetown. Erica Hofmann led 18th-ranked Syracuse with three goals. Jenna Szyluk added two goals and one assist, but the Hoyas never trailed and picked up a 17-9 win.
The Orange picked up the pace in its final game of the road trip at Albany. Lauren Brady and Phoebe Burns each scored three goals to lead the team to their first win of the season, 18-3. The victory at Albany marked the beginning of the first of two six-game winning streaks that the team would record in 1999.
Syracuse returned home to host Notre Dame on March 23. Szyluk scored six goals and had one assist to lead the team in an 18-11 victory over the Irish. SU recorded its third win of the season by an 11-2 margin against Massachusetts, and 1999 graduate Carrie Bolduc scored the game-winning goal with 1:22 remaining to earn the team its sixth win of the season with a 10-9 upset at No. 13 Boston University.
After a close loss to 11th-ranked Rutgers, the Orange won its next four regular season games. The streak started with a 9-3 victory against New Hampshire. In its next victory against Boston College, SU recorded a season-high 20 goals. Syracuse kept its winning streak alive with a 12-6 triumph versus Cornell in the regular season home finale. Hable scored a goal at the 24:31 mark to start a 6-0 scoring run that would secure the victory. Szyluk had three goals and an assist to lead the team.
SU finished the regular season on the road with a 14-3 victory over Fairfield. Five different Syracuse players scored in the first half, and Ewing did not allow a first-half goal as the team took a 5-0 halftime lead. The Orange scored the first six goals of the second half before Fairfield scored its first goal at the 16:35 mark. Bolduc led the Orange with four goals, while senior Kara Hanover added five assists.
After a 10-4 regular season, Syracuse began the ECAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The team played the three-seeded Boston University at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn. Against the Terriers, Brady scored two first half goals and the teams entered the locker room at halftime tied at 2-2. Hable tallied SU’s next four goals, but the score remained tied, 6-6, with 7:39 remaining. BU took the lead with 21 seconds left and won the draw control, but Hanover made an interception and threw a long pass to Jessica DeRosa, who scored with four seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless first overtime, Hanover scored the game-winner with 1:26 remaining to give the Orange a 9-8 overtime victory. Ewing made an incredible 21 saves against the Terriers to lead Syracuse to victory.
With the victory against BU, Syracuse advanced to the championship game against Yale. Hable scored twice in the first half, leading Syracuse to a 5-3 halftime advantage. Brady scored less than two minutes into the second half to increase the lead to 6-3. After two consecutive goals by the Bulldogs, Szyluk scored two straight as the Orange took an 8-5 lead with 11:32 remaining. Yale cut the lead to 8-7, but Hanover secured the championship with her second goal of the game with 4:30 remaining. Szyluk finished the game with three goals and Ewing recorded 13 saves to lead the team to a 9-8 victory and the ECAC title. Ewing was named tournament MVP, recording 37 saves for a 7.75 goals against average and a .694 save percentage.
Individual honors accompanied the success of the team. Hable, who finished the season with 37 goals and a team-high 20 assists, received third-team All-America honors, becoming the first All-American in the program’s history. Bolduc, Hable and Szyluk each earned regional All-America honors, while head coach Lisa Miller was named the North Region Coach of the Year by the IWLCA.
