The No. 13 Orange started out the season with a 15-9 win against Harvard. The team was led by freshmen Katie Rowan and Megan Mosenson who combined for seven goals in their first collegiate game. Gaddy Fortune also contributed three goals, while sophomore Kristin Brady matched a school record with 10 ground balls in the victory.
The Orange then went on to defeat No. 3 Dartmouth, matching the highest-ranked team that SU has defeated. Caitlyn Dragon scored the game-winning goal with one second left in overtime to lead the Orange to victory. Dragon finished the game with three goals while Mosenson also recorded three goals and one assist. This overtime win was the first for the Orange since March 1, 2003.
After a loss on the road to No. 7 Virginia where Fortune earned her second hat trick of the season, the Orange defeated Binghamton 21-2. Fortune tallied a career-high five points as 11 different Orange student-athletes scored in the game. Melody Agnew paced the Orange with five assists, which is the third-most in school history.
The Orange took on Georgetown in its BIG EAST opener and despite four goals scored by Rowan, Georgetown came away with the 10-7 win. At mid-season, the Orange went on a four-game win streak. Syracuse defeated Massachusetts, Towson, Connecticut and Albany to improve to 6-2. Dragon led the team against Massachusetts scoring two goals and earning a career-high six ground balls. Jen Kasel stopped a season-high 15 shots against Towson. Rowan had outstanding performances, recording her fourth hat trick of the season in the win against Towson and earning a season-high six points against Connecticut. In the win against Albany, senior Evelyn Long contributed her first career hat trick.
Top-ranked defending national champions, Northwestern came to the Carrier Dome and edged out with a 13-11 win over the Orange. It was Northwestern’s closest regular-season contest during its run to its second-consecutive national championship. Fortune’s fifth hat trick of the season and two goals and one assist from Rowan were just not enough for the Orange to gain the upset. The Orange lost another close game on the road to Loyola. Gaddy Fortune scored three goals in the final minutes of regulation to push the game into overtime, but Loyola scored early in overtime and held on for the victory.
In the next two games the Orange came out victorious against Colgate and Rutgers. The Orange was once again led by Fortune and Rowan, who both recorded four goals against the Raiders. In the win against Rutgers, Rowan earned a season-high of six goals and Fortune matched her own career-high with five scores.
The Orange rounded out the season with three close competitions against ranked-foes Cornell, Notre Dame and Penn. Against Cornell, Fortune recorded two goals which tied her for third on the single season scoring list. In the heartbreaking loss against Notre Dame, Fortune earned the second spot on the single season scoring list with three more goals. In the final game against Penn, Fortune and Rowan combined for four goals. Rowan with 56 points tied for fourth on the single season list.
