Syracuse Player Quotes
Syracuse vs. Villanova
January 19, 2008
Syracuse, N.Y. – Carrier Dome
Donte’ Greene, Fr., F
On fouling out:
“The fifth one was definitely a charge and there is nothing I can do about that. I just felt like I came out too slow tonight and hurt my team.”
On Syracuse gaining momentum before his fifth personal foul:
“Definitely, we were definitely getting up where we needed to be, getting into the motion and things started coming to our side and my fifth foul just killed us and also Corey Fisher hit that three at the same time.”
On the team being in foul trouble:
“It hurts us a lot especially when we’re playing six or seven guys. It’s tough but we have to learn from it and move on.”
Scoop Jardine, Fr. G
On extra pressure on the backcourt players in the second half:
“I think that it just came from transition defense, and just defense period, I think in the first half we didn’t really have a lot of offense but our defense was all over the place. It was getting to the shooters and just playing and they were rattled. In the second half we got in foul trouble so we relaxed and everyone was trying not to be too aggressive because they knew they were in foul trouble. If we can just get our transition defense and defense in general down, we will be good.”
On turnovers:
“I give them credit. They were standing on the big men and would get in the way when I was trying to drop it off to them. That is on my behalf, I have to know when to pass and when to shoot and I figured they were going to do that from the game against Rutgers when I was getting in there and dropping it off. I just have to know when because I was trying to get Arinze [Onuaku] in the game because he really wasn’t in the game so I think I was over doing stuff.
“I never want to get turnovers and I thought I played bad, everyone kept talking about the 15 points I had, but I had eight turnovers. I just have to go watch the game and learn from my mistakes for Georgetown.”
On trying to make plays on offense:
“Jonny had a great game and I saw him go out so I knew I had to pick it up, but I think I went too hard and I should have calmed us down. I think we had them on the ropes at one point and I just needed to calm us down and dump the ball inside.”
Jonny Flynn, Fr., G
On playing against Scottie Reynolds before:
“I played against a lot of those guys in ABCD camp, we each know each other and so you want to win a game like this when you have friends on the other team because they text you and brag about it and things like that but we just have to bounce back and get ready for Georgetown Monday.”
On what he can learn from Scottie Reynolds:
“One thing he is great at is just getting people up in the air. He can get you up in the air and get the foul and is still strong enough to get the shot up. He can squeeze through little cracks and find shots for himself and open players. That just comes with having a year of college basketball under your belt and playing for a great coach like Jay Wright who is teaching them all the right things.”
On Donte’ Greene and Arinze Onuaku in foul trouble:
“One is tough enough but when you have both of your horses down there in foul trouble it almost makes things, you don’t want to say impossible but it makes it so hard for you to keep up the intensity, get the rebounds and things like that. Nothing against our bench but when you lose two main key guys like that it is hard to pick up the pace and keep it up.”
On being double teamed late in the second half:
“That is definitely what started happening so I started kicking off and things like that so we just have to learn how to not foul people. Some of those fouls we do are little cheap fouls, miss a shot and just grab somebody or something like that. Fouls like that add up in the end and they came back and bit us today.”
On the loss:
“We see every loss as an opportunity that has slipped through our fingers, especially this one. Going in at half time against a nationally ranked team like that and having them on the ropes we just didn’t close down on them.”
